Pours brown with a dences tan head.
I’m having problems finding any kind of aroma here. Just kind of a mess. Mostly just esters.
There flavor is just kind of mashed together. Lots of hot alcohol. No real hop or malt character that stands out.<br?
Medium body. High carbonation. Astrigently dry finish.
The lable on the bottle says barley wine. Please. Here we say IIPA. Pah----lease!

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 4, 2007 very dark coloured with a tall tight foamy tanish head. Not getting much for aroma. There are a lot of hops that dominate the flavour. Strong and Malty with well hidden alcohol and some roast flavour. I’m really impressed with how drinkable this is. JMFG (1514), Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 3, 2007 Courtesy I forget, either SoLan or dnsowden. Dark chestnut brown with a broken uneven white head. Aroma is a mix of hops, alcohol, and chocolate, in order of intensity. The chocolate aroma is a nice touch. Taste is more chocolately than expected, but a dark sharp hop character comes out in the finish. The chocolate adds a good moderating nuance to the hops. Floback (333), Naples, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 3, 2007 Pours an intriguing black with purple hues underneath a fingernail of purple-ish head. Tight webs of lacing. Nose is dark fruits, i.e. plum and red grape, and resinous hops. Flavors contain more grassy hops, hints of caramel maltiness, and oak wood. Medium carbonation and full body. Hops conceal the alcohol well as the ABV warms the throat. Rounded mouthfeel is comforting and inviting. Aroma and flavor are well-balanced. Great brew. xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 1, 2007 Bottle from West Lakeview, Chicago. Opaque black to VERY dark brown with large, long lasting tan head. Aroma is big hop, dark malt, semi-doughy. Nice big pine hop flavor, nice malt backbone, caramel, citrus, grainy, dark fruit, but mostly big hop fruit. Full body and creaminess. I would probably call this a dark barley wine/IIPA. Pretty great for us hop heads. Guerde (699), Welcome, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 31, 2007 (bottle) Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Citrusy smell with also some roasted notes in there as well. Taste is chocolate at first with a nice bitter finish of hops. Thick mouthfeel on this one, not bad. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 30, 2007 Pours dark ruby brown with a tall tan head and strong lacing. Very roasty for a IIPA/barleywine/whateva. Bitter finish is strong, will hold up well to age.Light hint of cherry, chocolate, and the hops give it more fruitiness in the finish. Kinda reminds me of a more roasty and less citric arrogant bastard. Nice beer that will gain complexity over the next year and turn to more of a barleywine as the hops settle. dogfishho (172), Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 30, 2007 The beer poured a nearly opaque black with a light colored head. Almost no light passed through in my tulip glass, though the beer did not seem to pour with the viscosity of other that are this dark. The aroma is muddled. While the heat from the alcohol makes it difficult to pick out other individual notes, there is certainly some evidence of sweet toffee malts, chocolate, the pine of Columbus hops, and a perfume-like fruit aroma. The flavors are very unique, as I have found with all Nøgne Ø beers. Again, there is a strong alcohol presence, but the flavors of whole grain bread, caramel, dry vanilla, and a vinuous quality thats hard to describe. Then there are the hops... and lots of em! This beer is quite bitter. The huge, crisp, citrusy, hops come through on the long, long finish and are really only perceptible after the rest of the beer is swallowed. The texture of the beer in the mouth is heavenly. The small carbonation bubbles stay throughout the entire drink (actually over an hour for me!) and provide a soft, silky base for the beer to roll through your mouth. Fantastic!
