TampaBrew (715), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 7, 2009 Poured amber. Nose was nice booze, sweet malts, some floral hops and citrus hops. Flavor was warming alcohol, sweet hop flavor and nice malt balance. Seems like time in the bottle has really muted the hop character and I think it evolved into a barley wine. Definitely not a IIPA. Nice beer though. Would love to try it again. kiefdog (1534), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 7, 2009 Bottle courtesy of Ib4lb. Pours a dark brown color with thin white head. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of vanilla, booze, caramel, muted hops, light pine. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of vanilla, booze, brown sugar, caramel, sweet honey and light spice, Generally medium body with a pleasing light floral hop finish. Muggus69 (461), Sydney, Australia Jun 7, 2009 500ml bottle. Batch number 365. Brewed 28.05.08. BB 28.05.13
Good pop, pours a deep brown body with a thick, creamy, persistant tan head.
Hops drive the nose straightup; woody, spicy, distinct bitter orange and grapefruit rind, slight grassiness. Certainly some underlying malt, toffee and roasted notes of bitter chocolate play it out.
Body has bit bitterness from the word go, well balanced by underlying malt. Carbonation is medium with a slight creaminess of texture that somehow disguising a big abv quite well.
Resinous hops take hold on the body. Once again, plenty of piney wood, and grapefruit rind, bit of earthy spice in the works. Malt body opens out a bit more, nice hints of liquorice, brown sugar, dark chocolate, light roast coffee, and vinous fruit bolster and contain a fair bit of the hop character. Finish is highly bitter, lingering with a mishmash of roasted astrigency, malt sweetness and sharp citrus, really making another sip tempting...and thusly making a 10% beer disappear very quickly!
I like how they mention how this should be regarded as a Barley Wine, because it’s very close. Really a mishmash of styles for me, possibly could pass as an "American strong ale", like the Winter Ale I just tried. Sorry, i’m rambling now, but yes, overall this is a very intensly flavoured brew with a bitter finish and could age very well, yet it’s not unbearable as alot of Barley Wines often are young, so it’s middle ground, but probably not what i’d regard as an IIPA mainly due to the roasted malt character. markwise (1132), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA Jun 6, 2009 Thanks kiefdog for the share. Poursw dark cola brown with a tan head. Nose is caramel, hops, and pine sap. Flavor is similar with some sweetness to it and the typical malty caramelness. Medium-bodied and not bad overall. Chef Chad (102), Grand Junction, Colorado, USA Jun 4, 2009 Simply put this was nothing short than amazing.... This had one of the biggest and most pleasing noses on any beer I have ever had.. Huge pine and Citrus floral that actually filled the room when it was poured into my glass.. Orange brown with a very nice thick off white head that lasted . Ample carbonation that helped the drinkability out being that this is a very hoppy beer. Fantastic balanced hoppy goodness going on here.. Lots of pine and grapefruit noted, but it was also malty and sweet. I found myself comparing it to 90min. The depth of the beer makes me think that it is neither a IIPA or a Barleywine jeffc666 (1884), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Jun 4, 2009 Looks like a b-wine not an IIPA, dark ruby-brown, opaque. Thick creamy tan head. Nicely balanced sweet malt- pungent hop aroma. Flavor is very IIPAish. Hops dominate, malts are there as a vehicle of bitterness. Not bad but very pedestrian in a very competitive category. HOPSHUNTER (376), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 4, 2009 Bottle at Tampa tasting. Poured a reddish chestnut color with a significant eggshell head. Big hops in the nose with some caramel notes. Body is medium to full with soft carbonation. Flavor starts sweet chocolate malt then followed by a generous dose of American hops. Fairly sweet with warming alcohol. Finish is slightly bitter. Good! Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Jun 2, 2009 Sampled at Springslicker’s Fish Fry ’09. Dark hazy brown pour with thin khaki head. Sweet berries and light chocolate and malt caramel. Alcohol burn in the flavor, with toffee and some pine. Okay, but I could live without it. And Waaaaay too expensive, and not worth the price.
