| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 16, 2008 Huh, IIPA? This isn’t a standard barleywine, but it seems even further from IIPA... I say American strong ale, but eh! Dark brown with a big tan head. Kind of looks like Angel’s Share. Sweet dark malt. Fruity prunes. A bit of astringency? Slightly vegetal. A thicker viscous or creamy body. Sweet astringency to a stronger dark malt character. Some alcohol. Amarillo? Darkfruit. Some might do this beer some good. malrubius (1005), Valley Stream, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 28, 2009 Bottle in snifter. Dark brownish red with nice lasting tan head and lace. Toasted brown sugar aroma with hops yeast and a little warmth. Toasted brown sugar malt with mild dark fruit mild wood and very dry (almost too dry) mildy bitter finish with a little lingering woodsiness. Medium-full body and medium low carbo (and room temp) make for a great creamy mouthfeel. An excellent barleywine...as an IIPA, not so much. Arayaga2 (1001), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 14, 2007 Almost completely opaque black with a medium height brown head. Sweet boozy floral aroma with hints of licorice. Taste is roasty and bitter with a resinous woody edge. My bottle, unlike this page indicates that this is a BWA rather than an IIPA, and I have to agree with the label on this issue. Singleminded bitterness clings to the palate long after the finish. $9/500ml Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 6, 2007 glorious pour. About 2 inches of dark tan head and thick black body. Aroma isn’t too strong. Pine hoppiness, and chocolate. Flavor is a lot stronger. Strong pine and citrus hop flavors, but still a fair amount chocolate sweetness, a little chalkiness. Very bitter. Seems a lot higher than 80IBUs. A ton of lingering sharp bitterness. This is actually very good. I might push this more towards a barley wine. No evidence of 10% either. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Apr 18, 2008 500ml bottle, thanks a ton to nhorween for his gift package. i love his package. this poured far darker than i was expecting, harkening back to barleywines before they were glorified double IPA’s. close to opaque, dark eggplant color. changing it up from plum. the aroma is hoppy at the front, lots of honeyed walnuts, strong dark fruits, and generally sweet. nuts, resin, earthy. tastes surprisingly dry. shockingly so. immediately bitter and hoppy, chocolate comes from the bottom, pretty astringent, and alcohol rounds the side warmingly without really tasking like alcohol. i had this at cellar temp, but i wonder if it’ll be too alcoholic by the time i’m nearing the end of the bottle. body is interesting, very full bodied and thick but with a pretty fair amount of carbonation lingering in the end of the swallow. there’s no way this is a IIPA if that’s what nogne thinks. especially with the chocolate malt and, interesting, wheat, this reminds me in its unclassifiability of old viscosity. it’s pretty doughy. Dark brown pour with tan head and good lacing.Caramel\black malt and dark fruit aromas. Sweet malty taste up front with a bitter dry finish. Good blend, good brew. NOGNE0 impresses me every time !! The cerimonial humping of the bottle was done. blklab2007 (987), Connecticut, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 28, 2009 bottle poured into a snifter has an orange brown color and a heavy coating of off white head that retained well. aroma has sweet malt, peppery hops, sugar sweetness, and spiced yeast. a little musty but nice. mouth feel is medium but coats well, frothed up with the high carbonation. flavor has some roast, toasted malt, bitter hops, nutmeg, spiced yeast, and something that gives it a twang i cant quite pin down. sweet and bitter with some interesting spices going on. somewhat in a style of it’s own.
