Half a World Away is an Imperial Red Ale and the culmination of Ingrid and Nick’s great adventure. In the collaborative brewers exchange with Holgate Brewhouse of Woodend, Victoria in Australia the two brewers swapped lives and jobs. Inspired by the basic ingredients of beer, the reciepe for this malty ale was developed side by side with friendships with brewers half a world away. Pairs well with rich barbeque dishes. Enjoy in good company.

Bottle at home. One year old. Pours a cloudy dark nut brown colour with a small, light beige head. Aroma of dried fruit, fruity hops, caramel, maple syrup and brown sugar. The flavour has more wood, cola, leather and roasted malt. Has a silky and rich mouth feel, and a light bitterness. A complex, round and balanced ale.

500mL bottle poured into a tulip. Deep brown to mahogany, cloudy, medium off white head, good lacing. Aroma of brown sugar, dark fruit-plums maybe raisins, some resiny hop notes. Flavor is the same with the addition of strawberries, other tropical fruits. Finish is overly sweet, malty, some bitterness. Overall enjoyable, the addition of the fruity character was a nice change, but the sweetness became cloying.

500ml bottle @Cimmeria, Oviedo.06-03-2014.
In short: a sweet amber ale.
Pours dark red with nice off white head. Short head retention, some lacing. malty, caramel, spicy aromas. Medium body, average carbonation, some crispy texture. Taste is too much caramel, some spicy, subtle roasty flavours. A bit unbalanced. Enjoyable anyway.

Brown, with beige head. Sweet cherries and toffee in aroma. Cherries, chocolate, toffee and good desert wine in taste, with a slightly sour sting. Round mouthfeel.

Slightly hazy, very dark red to copper body with a nice off-white head that ends up as a very thin layer, good lacing. The aroma is strong and has some really delicious notes of slightly overripe fruits. It’s a very hoppy aroma, but I also get nice notes of caramel. In addition to these notes, that actually reminds me of an aged DIPA, I get herbs and liquorice, or maybe we’ll just merge those two into anise seed. The taste is a wonderful mix of massive sweetness and long-lasting, biting bitterness. A whole bottle is maybe a bit too much sweetness for one man to handle, but it’s fairly well balance nevertheless. The flavours are very strong and complex, it’s heavy hoppy and moderate malty: a huge basket of sweet fruits (both slightly overripe fresh fruits, and dried fruits), grapefruit, caramel and refreshing anise. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. The mouthfeel is beyond belief, the texture of this full-bodied masterpiece is smooth, velvety and creamy and the carbonation is soft + a few extra bubbles. L-O-V-E-L-Y!

500 ml bottle from Vinmonopolet, Vika. Dark brown and somewhat unclear. Earthy aromas with hints of bark and must. Alcohol aromas. Warming as it enters the mouth. Rich and caramelly. Bready and nutty malts. Prunes. Unclean and muddy flavours. The alcohol is easy to notice. Did not like this one much.

Bottle at Beer Hunters. Hazy amber color, good off-white head. Woody and berryish aroma, a bit toffeish. Even Earthy. Medium-bodied. Berryish, strawberry, red currant, toffee Sweetish and kind of messy. I don’t get an idea of this brew.

Starts sweet..finishes smooth, then lingers with a slight bitterness. Almost a doughy flavor, but in a good way. Complex, has many layers to the taste. Very alcoholic, but it is very hard to tell by how smooth it is. Dark red hues, very pretty. I really like this beer.

A beautiful, reddish brown beer with a creamy, big and yelloish head. The nose is sweet and caramelly, riped fruits, strawberries, some tropical fruits, hint of dry wood, medium bitterness. Taste isn’t so sweet than aroma, still sweet and caramelly malts, wood, some herbs. Medium+ bodied, low carbonation, quite smooth to drink. Quite nice, strongly malty beer, a pretty good balance.
