This is the second release of Special Holiday Ale, which was first brewed in San Diego in 2008. Each brew is following the same recipe, including Michigan chestnuts, white sage from southern California and Norwegian juniper berries, but differences in brewing and aging practices produce different beers. Cheers to being different! Skål!

500ml bottle. Clear, dark mahogany colour, ruby red glimmer, with small to average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, tan head. Spicy, dark malty aroma, a touch of malt lozenge and treacle, sage, laurel, juniper berries, mustard seed, caraway, already a good deal of sweetness advertised. Taste is sweet dark malty, notes of treacle, molasses, rather unspecific spiciness; very oily, viscous texture, soft and slightly sticky palate.

Draught @ Beer Temple, Amsterdam. Dark brown colour, off-white foamy head. Herbal (!) nose and taste along with liquorice, cough syrup. OK finish. Watery body, medium carbonation. Not my taste, but well executed spiced ale.

Flaske fra vinmonopolet. Litt disig Karamellfarget. Medium skumtopp. Moderat karbonert. Smaker karamell, krydder, honning, furunål og mørk frukt. Dette ølet er svæææært fornøyelig

Bottle - Pours cola color with a thin tan ring of head. Nose is ginger, with light dry bread and a little nuttiness. Taste is the same--honey, ginger, dry bread, and not much else. Mellow body with smooth carbonation.

0,5l bottle,2014. Dark brown, caramel head. Of all my ratings so far,the most distinct beer. Heavy scent of spice. Sage, chestnut, like a spicy schnapps. Good balance between sweet and sour, albeit a bit on the sour side. Lacks bitterness. Overpowering spicy perfume. Very interesting, but not the most friendly taste. I admire this one’s courage.

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2014 Bottle at home. Pours copper to dark ruby with small off-white head. Aroma of honey, spices (sage, clove), herbs, liquorice. Sweet taste with some harshness; spices, dried dark fruits and herbs, with sage dominating. Smooth mouthfeel. Bittersweet, herbal aftertaste.

Keg at Beer Temple, 19th December 14. This is sweet and medicinal, not my sort of beer at all, creamy sweet flavour, weird spiciness.

draught@Au Trappiste - dark brown beer with a solid long lasting creamy beige foam; light toasted and spicy caramelish aroma with notes of brushwood; sweet and full-bodied; light earthy, some residual sweetness and a long spicy and fruity finish with lingering notes of juniper

Copper brown near clear body, fawn 2-3 finger head, not much lacing. Aroma; big bunch of spices and foremost ginger, dough notes, floral hops, wooden malts. Taste; dark brown malts, ginger, citric notes, soft floral hops, malted spiced (juniper maybe) candies. Finishes mostly sweet and spiced, but some herbal hoppy tastes too. Feels soft and nice in the mouth. Overall tasty. SpiceHerb [50cl brown btl, abv8.5%, IBU50, 22°, BB27/3-18, B@Vinmonopolet Tromsdalen, 10€, T@höme]
