This is the second release of Special Holiday Ale, which was first brewed in San Diego in 2008. Each brew is following the same recipe, including Michigan chestnuts, white sage from southern California and Norwegian juniper berries, but differences in brewing and aging practices produce different beers. Cheers to being different! Skål!

Bottle 500ml. @ home.

[ Trade by yngwie ]. Clear dark red brown color with a average to large, creamy, good lacing, fully lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, fruity - berry, pumpkin - cinnamon - nutmeg, maybe ginger also, light roastead, nutty notes. Flavor is light heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a long duration, anis - juniper, berries, spicy, sweet. Body is medium, texture is oily - syrupy and sticky, carbonation is soft. Not my liking to sweet and strange spicy .. [20100531]

Draft. A black beer with a brown shine - seemingly a bit murky with a thin tan head. The aroma has strong notes of ginger and cardemomme as well as medium notes of roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor has strong notes of spices - ginger and cardemomme, combined with medium notes of malt and chocolate, leading to a dry spicy finish.

Bottle. It looks quite lovely in the glass, it’s almost clear, chestnut-colored, and a finger-thcik, creamy, beige head sits patiently on top, leaving some lacings as the glass empties. The aroma has a nice anise-like start, guess it’s the sage playing. A juniper-like touch also chimes in, along with roasted malts, dired fruits, caramel and little touch of molasses or some other dark sugar. It’s full-bodied and almost sticky sweet, but with enough alcohol and bitterness to cope with it. At least as a beer for the darker, colder months. There’s licorice and juniper berries too in the flavor, and a fine bitterness to finish it. Loved drinking this one last Christmas, so much I obviously forgot rating it, and was delighted to hear it will return this year. 100711
