4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Collaboration between Nögne Ö and Terrapin, with a dense and regularly structured, creamy, yellow beige head and ink black colour, totally opaque at first, but revealing itself to actually be a hazy dark burgundy in the last drops. Pleasant sweet, spicy and malty aroma of warm chocolate sauce with cognac, gingerbread, dried banana, black pepper, rye bread, dried banana, kahlua, pipe tobacco, shortbread, toast, raisins, candied figs, hints of vanilla, red wine, dried grapefruit peel, liquorice, brambleberries, coffee beans, pine needles (i.e. American hops almost like in a black IPA but much more subtle) - something new seems to pop up every time I take a sniff. Tangy onset of condensed candied fruits, dates, raisins, with only a ’narrow’ trail of sweetness, paired with a deep rye sourishness and spiciness, soft carbo with a very creamy, velvety, thick body, flowing into the throat like fresh cream; a liquorice-like flavour plays somewhere in the middle, over a deep, thickly layered malt backbone, caramelly in the most noble sense of the word, nutty, bitter chocolatey and lightly coffeeish in the end, with just a dash of bittering espresso on the back of the tongue, further reinforced with peppery, piney, dried citrus peel hop bitterness, lingering fruitiness and warming, brandy-like alcohol; the overall impression is very malty but deeply, softly spicy as well (likely the rye effect mixing with the hops), with a perfect balance between sweet and bitter. Smooth, clean, pleasantly warming and technically perfect imperial porter. I am not yet familiar with Terrapin’s beers, but the Nögne Ö quality stamp is unmistakably there.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Dark brown, average and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate to full, malty and sweetish aroma, some caramel and roasted malt, light licorice and coffee. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish flavor, some caramel and light roasted malt, light licorice and coffee. Finish is average to long, malty and lightly sweetish - sweetish, light caramel and some roasted malt with light coffee, faint licorice and light hoppyness. Caramel sweetish IP with roastiness makes the finish bit drier. Way too sweet for me.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle @ Nieuwjaarsborrel 2014, courtesy of jmgreenuk. Pours a very dark brown beer with a small brown head on top. Aroma is grainy, rye and has some licorice. Flavor is very sweet with a big grainy base in it. The sweetness is backed up by a big bitter flavor in the back. Balance is very good in this beer, yet it’s missing a few components to be a great beer. Still quite good.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours very dark brown with a big off white head. Nose shows vanilla and milk chocolate with some balanced espresso tones. Quite roasty with a hint of piney hops. Some wood notes and piney hops come through in the taste. Vanilla and sweet milk chocolate finish this one off very smoothly. Great stuff

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Belmont bottle of unknown age since I found it hiding in a box. This is a really great, strong porter with tons of coffee and chocolate that finishes with a spicy rye bite. Well done.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
(Nøgne Ø / Terrapin Imperial Rye Porter) Bottle 500 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 9%
Totally black and thick pour, minimal dark brown head that builds up though, still with low retention. A thin line of lacing around the glass.
Aroma has alcohol, vanilla, chocolate, light roasted character.
Taste has also roasted malts, a bit pf ash on the finish, vanilla, notable alcohol.
Medium thick body, good carbonation, dry and sticky at the same time on the palate.
Great beer, not much difference from a well made imperial stout, I could drink this the whole day.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
9% bottle from Rakuten, roughly 1000 yen. A dark reddish black pour with a good finger of a tan head. A strong boozy, malty chocolate aroma wafts from the glass. The taste is full bodied, smooth, rich chocolate, some roastiness, a fair amount of booze & a kind of tangy quality reminiscent of a port or other slow drinking aperitif. Nice stuff though I am not getting the kind of spiciness I usually associate with rye... A touch of smoke after warming, very pleasant.

Bottle - 500ml at Mondial de la Bière (Montréal, QC). Opaque black body with a thin beige foamy head. Robust malty/hoppy aroma with woody, licorice, chocolate, and spicy hints. Taste is slightly dominated by hoppy flavors. It carries oaky, yeasty, vanilla, and fruity notes. Ends with a long, warming bittersweet finish. Fantastic!

Grosse mélasse chocolatée et onctueuse qui cache très bien son alcool. Une infusion houblonnée ajoute également de la complexité et une finale fruitée.
