Bottle b761. Black, thickish, nonexistent head. Big chocolate roasted malt aroma. Feels soft, vanilla. A bit of licorice, molasses. Very ’normal’ imperial stout like. Body is full, soft, thick. Long. Roasted malts, a bit of espresso. Some wooden flavours. Quite nice IS/IP. I’m not sure what the rye contributed to the flavour palette, but I guess it’s possible to sense some ryeness when you know about it. Otherwise a very nice black drink. Reminds me of Divide’s products.

jonno (2345) - JAPAN - NOV 10, 2012
Espresso toffee nose. Big black and tan head pour. Great lacing. Quite spicy. Rich roastiness and espresso bitter finish. Not overtly complex (like most Nogne beers), but VERY drinkable and like able (again like most Nogne beers).

Poured from a 500ml bottle, thanks to Santa. This is very rich and warming. Lots of chocolate, malty, coffee, the rye adds a slight spicy note. This is very well balanced and tasty.

Black pour. Big tan head, whipped cream consistency. Plenty of lacing as the head slowly fades. Big chocolate, spicy malt aroma. Little bit of a hop character. Malty, chocolate, pepper. Pretty good. Spicy back with a big hop bitterness. Pretty good beer.

Pours a dark chocolate brown, almost black color with a two finger mocha head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks and chunks of lacing left behind. Roasted dark malt aroma with a spicy rye presence that’s complimented by earthy hops, lactic cream and sweeter notes. Really strong rye character along with burnt toast, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee and oatmeal. Slightly boozy and on the verge of becoming acrid but the rye adds another dimension of complexity that helps the nose. On the fuller end of medium bodied with a surprisingly hop forward flavor profile. Very dry and bitter with a dank, earthy pine needle presence that lingers over the spicy rye and roasted malts into a bone dry finish. In desperate need of some sweetness to combat the acrid, burnt malt profile and overpowering hop bitterness. As it warms and the palate adjusts, the rye character and subtle malt sweetness comes toward the forefront. Hints of burnt dark chocolate malt, oatmeal, robust coffee bean and caramel before finishing with subtle boozy heat. Not bad, but too hoppy for the style in my opinion and could use some more sweetness for balance.
