COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our 100th batch, brewed for the enjoyment of the brewers, but popular demand forced us to release it commercially. Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire.

Recommended serving temperature 16°C/61°F Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malt; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23,5°P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Editor’s note: Even though the label says "Barley Wine" in the States, the brewery usually says it’s brewed to be an IIPA. The American label was supposedly a glitch. In Europe it’s sold as an IIPA. But to save the admin crew some time dealing with user feedback, it’s listed as a Barley Wine.

Dark brown color, lots of tan foam. Great nose on this one. Sweet and complex, chocolate and dark fruits. Slick and boozy. Kind of thin on the body, the alcohol really dominates the flavor very hoppy and the alcohol and the hops add a somewhat astringent charachter.

czar (4378) - Québec, Quebec, CANADA - SEP 17, 2014
pours murky light brown-reddish with a small light beige head, some retention and lacing. spicy and sweet toasted caramel, loads of pine, resin and mint, peppery booze - lots, some underlying red fruitiness, burnt nuts with a touch of smoke, grass. light carbonation, medium body - oily and quite thick, harsh boozy spicy-resinous-citrusy-piney finish. C’s overdose. still rough, even after sitting for 2 years..

The body is dark brown, near black and came with a small light tan head. The head settles to a small ring of foam in no time. This ring makes for some nice lacing at the top of the glass. As I drink it becomes slick and slides right down the glass. I get some nice deep spicy citrus and mild pine hop notes over what seems like a pumped up Brown Ale or Porter like bass. This malt is roasty with notes of caramel and coffee. Big roasted malt character and solid hop bitterness blend well together on the palate. It’s full and smooth with a very mellow touch of alcohol. This is well hidden for a big 10% beer. Toasty and mildly sweet malty caramel notes slowly gives way to deep spicy/citrusy hop flavor and bitterness with a touch of leafy herb and pine as well. Hop bitterness slowly fades of the tongue deep into the finish.

The aroma is intimidating, forewarning a heavy brew. But the taste is not that heavy after all. Rich, but not too much. Sweet, malt, rye (even though there isn’t any), dried fruits, hops.

500ml bottle @ the 8th Shrewsbury Bottle Share, brought by myself, plucked from Clutch’s end-of-tour grot box. Pours dark brown with off-white head. A big bold genre-straddling CDA, blending pine, malts and citrus flavours with a touch of honey sweetness creeping in. An excellent, attention-grabbing beer.

Pours ruby with a nice head. Aroma: very hoppy, malty and caramel notes. Taste: pretty sweet and heavy (typically for a barley wine), great hoppy bitterness makes the taste more lively. Palate: warming and hoppy. A great barley wine.

Shared between 4 at the September 2014 Shrewsbury beer exchange, cheers Mat. 500ml bottle; BBD 9 Dec 2018. Ruby hue to the darkish amber body. Dark fruits and semi-sweet malty molasses rule the aroma and taste with mini citrus hop underbelly. Decent, hides the alcohol nicely too.

Pours dark cola colour with 2 finger fluffy beige head that leaves a nice lacing. Aromas of grapefruit, toffee, biscuit, malts. Smell is in between a barley wine and a dark IPA. Taste is also in between the two styles, grapefruit, treacle, overcooked toast. Sweet at the front end and bitter in the finish, without a huge amount of dryness. Full bodied. Dark IPAs aren’t normally my thing at all but this is great.

Bottle at home (0.5L, batch nr 989, 26-06-13). Pours dark brown with a beige head. Sweet aroma of fruity hops, caramel, malts, raisin, dark fruits, alcohol. Some roasted malts, coffee and chocolate as well. Thick, creamy, mouthfeel. Sweet taste, dark chocolate, (roasted) malts, caramel, dark fruits, some yeast, and hops. Bitter hoppy finish with hints of roasted malts. Very nice.

Bottle. Hazy, dark grey colour with tan head. Sweet hops on nose. Chocolate, raisins, nuts, yeast, salt, earth in aroma also. Liquier texture, oily body, sweet dark malts firstly and extremely hoppy finish. Some gras and citrus notes under the basic level. Wow.. it’s so complex and perfect barley wine, strongly reminding an imperial IPA. Wonderful.

Dark ruby with minimal foam, lots of yeast floating in the bottle. Full sticky body, astonishing mouthfeel. Nose dominated by caramel malts, raisins, plums, roasted toast, exotic fruits hoppiness and some chocolate, similar in the mouth fruity and caramel sweetness followed by heavy yet short bitterness . Great, heavy beer. Either a IIPA with full, stronger than usual, body or heavily hopped barley wine - for me it’s the latter, maybe would have a kind of different opinion had I opened it when it was somewhere around 10 C, not 15+. Would love to drink it 99 times more.
