COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Andhrimnir is the chef of the Æsir and einherjat in Norse Mythology. Every day in Valhalla, he slaughters the beast Sæhrímnir and cooks it in Eldhrimnir, his cauldron. It is also the winner of Norwegian national championship for homebrewers. We at Nøgne Ø want to make this great barley wine available commercially, so beer drinkers will have an opportunity to experience the best Norwegian homebrew. Though made in Nøgne Ø brewery, this beer was brewed by its creator, Gahr Smith-Gahrsen. Ingredients: Grimstad water, malted barley, hops, yeast. 65 IBU.

Bottle, vintage 2009. Hearty thick medium amber pour with golden highlights and a dense golden crown. Aroma is sweetly malty, lots of toast and toffee, fruity with hints of butterscotch. Thickly malty palate, sweet buttery toffee (Worther’s), solid fruity accents (sweet sultanas, dates), bitter finish that balances perfectly. Sticky, chewy goodness. I wish I could get more of this!

Taster from bottle. Pours a hazy orange with little white head. Smells of sweet, orange, apple and fig. Tastes somewhat cloyingly sweet, with a good medium bitterness to balance it out. Texture is syrupy. Body is medium. Finish is dry.

Flaske 0,5l fra Vinmonopolet, bestillingsutvalget. Batch 435.

Bottle shared by akevitt, batch 435. Pours a slightly hazy, dark red body with a thick light brown head. Aroma of sugars and fruits; a nice balance of apple cider, dark fruits, prune, brown sugar, and caramel with a hint of alcohol. An almost liqueur/wine scent. Flavor is similar with more sweet malts and sugars. Lightly carbonated with a very smooth mouthfeel. Light alcohol burn on the finish. A solid drinkable barleywine.

Bottle from 2009. Pours medium to dark brown with red hew with nice head that lingers around the rim of the beer. Nose is fruity ketones and aldehydes. First sip is bready with malty fruit flavors and toffee, bitterness still slight in finish.

On Tap. Aroma: Rich honey and caramel. Palate: Very smooth with long finish Flavor: Like the nose--very rich and flavorful. Comments: A smooth almost elegant version of a Barley Wine than isn’t just about power. Good palate.

Bottle sample at the high gravity tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 10/21/11. Cloudy copper pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of sherry, caramel, toffee, soft fruit, and booze. Caramel and chocolate malt flavor up front with a bit of fruit before a boozy caramel finish. Very good.

Batch 435, brewed 18-06-09 Pours a dark caramel brown color with amber edges and a one finger yellowish beige head that quickly fades into a thick lasting ring. Spots of lacing left behind. Sweet boozy aroma with lots of leathery and sweet malt character as well as some subtle spice and earthy hops. Some zesty, peppery notes along with subtle grassy hops up front quickly countered by the malts. Earthy and leathery with hints of caramel, rye, toffee and biscuit. Boozy sweetness but not overpowering. Medium bodied with a good balance of bitter, earthy hops, sweet, earthy malts and boozy sweetness. A strong hop presence up front with some slightly bitter, piny hops that linger over the sweeter notes into a slightly dry, hot finish. The malt profile is the dominant flavor with a good balance of sweet and earthy notes. Slightly leathery with hints of caramel, toffee, nut and hazelnut. Toward the end of the palate there is some slight boozy heat but the high ABV is very nicely balanced. Overall this beer is pretty well balanced and easy to drink. I imagine the hops have faded a bit but it’s still flavorful, complex and easy to drink.

500mL bottle, pours a beautiful murky dark mahogany with a beige head. Aroma of brown sugar, rich dark fruits, toffee, butterscotch and candied sugar. Flavour of dried, dark fruits, brown sugar, toffee and caramel malts. Well-integrated flavours with not too much sweetness. Quite complex and full-bodied. Delicious.
