Shared bottle at Bjorleik, Bergen. Courtesy of Tor Ivar Lyse. Wow! What a barley wine. Really well balanced and rich aromas and flavors. Aged a couple of years. Will brew a clone of this recipe. One of the best barley wines I’ve tried, smooth alcohol.

My Bottom Line:
Toasted and caramelized malts are balanced out by bitter hop resins in this classic English-style Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the murky brownish dark red.
-This is still quite bitter after all these years. It must have been intensely bitter early on...
-Oxidation is present but works nicely with the specialty malts and their residual sugars.
-Mild strawberry fruitiness is found underneath (usually a combination of hop geraniol and caramelized sugars).

Rated on 6-25-2011 (Bottle) This beer forms a small tan head that mostly diminishes, hazy orange body, fizzy, fast rising carbonation, lots of floaties, and no lacing. The aroma is caramel malt, citrus hops, fruity, and alcohol. The taste is sweet, caramel malt, fruity, citrus hops, alcohol, and has a dry finish. The mouthfeel is tingly carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. This beer has a very dry finish and is a sipping beer. It is worth trying.

Bottle aged over 4 years. Pours clear brown with off white head that recedes quickly. Nose of caramel malts, brown sugar, raisins, molasses
and a bit of mustiness. Biscuit and caramel malts smoothness and sweetness along with raisin, brown sugar and some mild abv heat on the finish. Great depth and aged superbly

I wouldn’t say I don’t like it, but I probably wouldn’t seek it out again. It’s good, but tastes a little too much like cough syrup for me.

500 ml bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. Bottled 18.06.09. Pours a hazed chestnut brown with a finger of beige head that goes thin and lasts. Some yeast floaters. Aroma of brown sugar, dried leaves, toffee, sweet boozy bread, mild spice, and toasted nuts. Flavor of earth, sweet boozy bread, pecans, brown sugar, raisins, dates, and dry leaves. Medium-bodied, with a malty, boozy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Good 4-year-old barley wine.

Thin head which dissipates quickly. Powerful and scrumptious aroma with lots of sweet malts, toffee, raisins, butterscotch and some wood overtones. Cloudy dark mahagony brown. Sweet and delicious flavor with lots of caramel, toffee, oak and a bit of resinous hops. Full flavored, complex and silky smooth in the mouth. Noticable alcohol presence and warming. Finishes sweet and malty with a nice alcohol tang. A brew that I have really enjoyed drinking! Need to find me some more of these.

Hazy medium brown. Aroma of raisin, toffee, and caramel. Tastes of raisin, toffee, caramel, and clove. Slightly sweet and balanced by a medium bitterness. Medium carbonation, full body, slightly creamy. Very good beer.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a creamy beigh head. Sweetish aroma of caramel, brown sugar, toffee and alcohol. Flavor was very sweet and warming with toffee, caramel, dark fruit, brown sugar, vanilla, and raisins with a medium to full body and had a dry and bitter finish.
