A dark brown English ale, in which classic English malts meet the spicy hoppiness of the new world. Recommended serving temperature 8°C/45°F. Goes very well with ‘pub grub.’

Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, chocolate, brown, amber, and caramel malt; Crystal hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

11°P, 27 IBU, 4,5% ABV.

Pours dark brown w/ a tall, semi creamy froth. Good hangtime reducing to a lasting spattered canopy. Aromas of dark chocolate and molases. Medium nectar w/ good carbonation creating a soft texture. Dry yet wet w/ a mild bitter souring component. Moderately roasted with the flavor spotlight on bakers cocoa. Other nuances of roasted coffee and nuts. The finish is bittered brightly w/ roasted nut shells. A refined brew showing the style well.

Pours with a light brown, three-finger head that goes slowly to a thin layer and leaves a good lace. Light carbonation and heavy bodied. Deep mahogany color. Nose is mellow chocolate. Flavor is molasses/chocolate, hints of a bitter finish. Nice brown. $5.20 for a 500ml bottle from Colonial Spirits, Acton, MA.

Really classy beer in compared to other "mild" beers in finnish food stores.

Dark brown with a light brown solid bubbly head. Notes of pine cones, milk chocolate, toasted wholewheat bread and dusty basements. Light sticky body but very liquid at the same time. Darker, roasted flavours dominate the beginning while the end is a more straightforward sweet malty taste. Definitely nice for the style and my older bottle has hold up great. I see how ’pub grub’ would go nice with it, but light ripened cheeses and hearthy home cooked stews and mashes should work even better I’d think.

50 cl bottle. Batch 404 Brygget 080109 BB 080111 - enjoyed 091211. Color is dark brown, head (foam comes out of the bottle, not really gushing but still) is beige, creamy, firm, sticky (good lace). Aroma’s: Heavy roast, ash, dark coffee, malty sweet, a bit red fruit/berries. Flavor is roasted-bitterish, like coffee. Light body. Finishes dry, with roast and rather bitter. Excellent still after three years.

Keg at Brewdog Camden. Brown coloured with beige creamy head. Aroma is grainy and roasty. Bit of brown bread and light spice. Taste is a bit of ginger, bready malts, bit of cream and some oats. Quite smooth but with a spicy prickle. Very easy to drink! Very nice.

2006 bottle from Julios, consumed on 2/23/07
Unpasteurized, unfiltered it certainly is. Light mahogany, with amber and tan hues. High clarity, leaving the sediment behind. Big beige head is full and rocky, being expertly retained and lacing quite profusely.
Popping the cap exposes some yeast phenol/esters, but they fully pass with breathing and it’s all pure pleasure from there. Controlled roastiness in the aroma gives plenty of hazelnut that melds with light pale malts to give a creamy-sweet hazelnut coffee-drink like nose. Soft, mildly fruity hops, with light earthiness and gentle grassiness give light bitterness/dryness and some bits of milk chocolate are noted on the finish. A touch of sourness, not sure if its malt tannin, or vinousness, but my guess is a moderate prune vinousness and anise-like maltiness. Vanilla cream smooths things with breathing, giving the coffee a more round, approachableness. Nice and full aroma, strong but not overdone. No alcohol noted. Maybe just a bit too much acidity/tartness for a brown ale, but otherwise quite inviting.
The light tartness is just ever-so slightly apparent in flavor, just a bit too heavy on the roasted malts, adding a touch of char-like slickness. But mostly, it’s a fantastically soft, unfiltered texture, with fluffy, tight carbonation and perfectly balanced maltiness lending chocolate, coffee and creamy sweetness. Minimal, peppery hops with some light fruity esters and just a wonderful hazelnut flavor through and through. Pleasing hop bitterness seals the deal. Tremendously drinkable. Wish this was available in six packs for a cheaper price!
