Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

bottle thanks to Session1979. Pours dark with a thin, off-white head which dissipated very quickly. Alcohol was prominent in the nose. Taste was fruity and chocolate. Mouthfeel was medium with heavy alcohol presence but not overpowering sweetness. more drinkable than others of this abv level.

Pours deep black into a snifter. Mocha head recedes to hug rim. Smoky pit fruit aromas. Boozy and smooth with a sweet roasted fruit middle and a lasting licorice alcohol burn.

Bottle #2012. Pours a very dark cola black with a medium light brown head. Aroma of black licorice, malt, prunes, plums, figs and dark chocolate. Taste of black licorice, figs, prunes, plums, malt and chocolate. Alcohol well hidden, but it definitely clears our the sinuses.

Courtesy of Quake1028. The aroma starts with coffee, chocolate, lots of alcohol, fudge and then more wafting fumes of alcohol tinged with hints of stewed dark fruits. The body is a full on black and holds a thin mocha brown head. The firs sip reveals dark chocolate, throat burning alcohol, esspresso, light cocoa and some herbal notes. Dark fruits including blueberry and cooked dark cherries appear and become more concentrated as this warms. The flavor is VERY concentrated. But, while good I wasn’t as wowed as I’d hoped to be.

bottle #1613 - enjoyed the same evening as Bell’s Expedition and at 16%, passed out shortly after...haha; jet black with tan head; aromas very sweet and strong; lots of chocolate and alcohol very obvious; has a sweet sharpness to it, similar to a red wine; soy and fruit in the flavors; velvety texture numbs your mouth; rich coffee and very rich; such a beer big, but still reasonable drinkable; made the Expedition seem like a light beer; coffee flavors underwhelming compared to something like Peche Mortel, but still a very impressive and bold brew

Bottle shared by Crosling, thanks Nick. Poured a deep brown/black color with a thin tan head that quickly receded to nothing. Aroma of light chocolate and overpowering anise and black licorice. Lightly sweet, sharp hot malt taste with some light smokiness leading into a lightly vinuous flavor that ends with more smoke and light black licorice undertones. Smooth, moderately slick on the palate. I can see how someone could really like this, I am just not a big fan of the flavors that are present in this brew.
