Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Black/dark brown. Small brown head. Faint aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Flavor of roasted malt, burnt caramel, coffee, light dose of bittersweet chocolate, and fusel alcohol. Medium/full body, smooth. Decent, not top 50.

What a shock to see this one. A black appearance with little head. The aroma has an alcohol presence but also contains some molasses, chocolate, coffee, and raisins. The flavor is quite sweet but that can be expected at 16%. The flavor contained some chocolate, coffee, licorice, raisins, and a hint of smoke. This lives up to expectations. Great beer!

Into glass snifter. Dark brown with red hue. Alcohol not present in the nose, but warms very nicely going down. Wouldn’t know it was that high proof before it warmed so much. This beer is honestly probably too good for me to fully appreciate.

Aroma is sweet dark malty oak, sugar, molasses. Fantastic legs with a nice opaqueness- no head. Taste is sugary sweet, oaky, dense with very concentrated bright fruit and cream. Mouth is creamy, dense, with a slight harsh bitterness. Overall it is not very beer-like, but I enjoyed it. Notes from a blind tasting. --- Need a re-rate possibly---

Bottle number 2099. Arrived in a tube, Pringles Can and was tagged. 22oz bottle. Pours the darked black. Aroma is quite vinous. Sweet, wine, butter. Flavor is of a sweet Cabernet Sauvignon. As it warms it tastes like "hot" Imperial Stout. Super Strong, High Alcohol. Roasty, Toasty, Heavenly, & Satanic. Thanks to Matt theBeeCellar. MY 1200th RATING!

Bottle number 2618. Dark black body producing only a weak effort for tan head. The aroma permeates wildly with a vinous character and a delicate yet full blast of chocolate. A touch of alcohol is also noticeable hiding away in the background. The flavor hits me as close to that of soy sauce at first but then decomposes into a complex mixture of coffee, chocolate, licorice, and smoke. The warming alcohol on the tongue shows itself but only slightly, serving as a reminder that this is beer, and not the most delicious milkshake I’ve ever had.

Bottle number 2031. Good sized dark brown head of dense and creamy bubbles. Reduces somewhat quickly to a thin foam. Sweet aroma but damn is it good! Dark fruit, molasses, a hint of vanilla and loads of sweet caramelly malts. Color is black as tar and totally opaque. Wow, flavorfull. Sweet and strong. Lots of sweetness but it does not overpower. More vanilla and a little bit of coffee. The fact that the coffee does not play a prominent role is good for me since I really don’t like coffee. Powerful alcohol presence but you really don’t notice it until late and at that point it is just a burning in the gums. Alcohol does not detract from the flavor. Little flat in the mouth but one would expect that from a 16% imperial stout!. Slick and full mouthfell with tons of character. Finishes roasty and strong with lots of sweet malts again. A world class brew and one worhty of 1500 for me! WOOHOO!!!

Bottle shared by jsquire. Thanks so much Jeff!! Poured a very small tan head that quickly dissipated, no lacing, opaque, no visible carbonation, and a black hue. The nose was malty, coffee, roasty, semi-bitter, alcohol, and wine. Very nice indeed! The flavor was lightly bitter, coffee, roasty, vinuous, chocolate, and a hint of dark fruit. Wow! What a nice combination! Wow! Tingly mouthfeel and medium body. Very quaffable, an imperial stout to be sipped and enjoyed to its fullest. This is a drink to behold! I would truly enjoy being able to have this one again and again. More than worthy of a try IMO. Thanks again, Jeff!
