Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Bottle #02099. Appearance: Pours an opaque black body. As for the head, no dice! Smell: Fragrant aroma of heavily roasted malts, coffee liqueur, acrid smoke, molasses, blackberry preserves, along with some sweetish wafts of alcohol. Taste: Dark, roasty malts with a sharp hit of coffee and a bit of molasses. Smokey tobacco hints. A touch of vinous blackberry based fruitiness. As it warms, you gain a dash of low-sodium soy sauce. Earthy, roasty bitterness on the finish. Distinct alcohol presence on that finish too, btw. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Mild carbonation. As warming as you’d imagine. Drinkability: Pretty decent for a high-octane stout, but it’s still pretty green and could only benefit from some age.

Pours dark brown with a thin ring of light brown bubbles. Aroma yields hints of complimentary coffee (as opposed to so many of these coffee infused beers that are just overdone), chocolate, some dark fruit, lots of wonderful roastiness. Tastes of chocolate, dark fruit, some bitter hints, touches of coffee, lots of malty depth. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Finish yields some residual bitter roastiness. Alcohol is incredibly well masked for such a high ABV beer. Excellent!

bottle from Oak Tree Buy Rite. Opaque black with a small creamy dark brown head. Aroma: alot of coffee, roast, chocolate, sweet malts and some alcohol. Taste is very big and assertive, with alot of coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and dark roasted malts. Body is very full with caramel sweetness and touches of dark fruit, but quite drinkable at it’s strength. Alcohol is moderate and shows itself in the finish, with lingering roast and earthy hop bitterness, and light touches of sugar.

Unbelievably sweet for 16 abv. Not as hot with alcohol as I expected. Almost no head on top of a very black body. Texture is smooth and oily. Aroma filled with chocolate and malt. Taste limits you to a sip with its heavy warmth kicking at the end.

Bottle #06073. Dark black color with a small, frothy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, strong coffee, roasted, burnt, caramel, licorice, alcohol, dark fruit / berry. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, syrupy, dry, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light to moderate alcoholic. Very very nice imperial stout so complex, powerfull in aroma and flavor but still easy to drink. *<;o)) 251207)

Bottle 03077 Pours opaque with a very thin tan head. Nose is like thick sweet malts. Mild roasted texture there as well. Flavor is supremely smooth. Superb! I can’t tell at all that this is a 16% abv beer. I can’t say there is a mass of character coming off this brew. But it is just damn nice to drink. Smooth liquid feel and a slightly lower carbonation. Certainly is easy to drink. Nothing showy here at all. Just a bloody smooth RIS. If this were available all the time (and a lot cheaper), I’d be a devoted customer. A well made RIS.

Pours black as midnight, with zero light opacity. Surprising 2 finger width head of dark brown foam, but does not last long. Mildly sweet aroma of coffee liqueur, smooth milk chocolate, and an almost Bourbon like vanilla aroma. The alcohol bring a bit of spiciness to the nose, and there is a base earthy aroma of oak. Flavor is sweet milk chocolate, vanilla and dark fruit, Bourbon quality as with the aroma. A bit of banana esters as well. Reminds me a bit of Bell’s Expedition on steroids. Slight bittering of baking chocolate and hops on the finish. Smooth and decadent feel, buoyed by the continual heat of alcohol throughout. Definitely not shy in the flavor or alcohol department. Savor over time, and share with friends. The alcohol is big, but complements the big malt flavor and doesnt overwhelm. Its actually got a nice overall smoothness to it, even with the prominent alcohol
