Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Feb 11, 2008 Pours dark brown with a thin ring of light brown bubbles. Aroma yields hints of complimentary coffee (as opposed to so many of these coffee infused beers that are just overdone), chocolate, some dark fruit, lots of wonderful roastiness. Tastes of chocolate, dark fruit, some bitter hints, touches of coffee, lots of malty depth. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Finish yields some residual bitter roastiness. Alcohol is incredibly well masked for such a high ABV beer. Excellent! hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Feb 11, 2008 bottle from Oak Tree Buy Rite. Opaque black with a small creamy dark brown head. Aroma: alot of coffee, roast, chocolate, sweet malts and some alcohol. Taste is very big and assertive, with alot of coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and dark roasted malts. Body is very full with caramel sweetness and touches of dark fruit, but quite drinkable at it’s strength. Alcohol is moderate and shows itself in the finish, with lingering roast and earthy hop bitterness, and light touches of sugar. tertons (80), East Providence, Rhode Island, USA Feb 9, 2008 Updated: Oct 6, 2009Unbelievably sweet for 16 abv. Not as hot with alcohol as I expected. Almost no head on top of a very black body. Texture is smooth and oily. Aroma filled with chocolate and malt. Taste limits you to a sip with its heavy warmth kicking at the end. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Feb 6, 2008 Bottle #06073. Dark black color with a small, frothy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, strong coffee, roasted, burnt, caramel, licorice, alcohol, dark fruit / berry. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, syrupy, dry, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light to moderate alcoholic. Very very nice imperial stout so complex, powerfull in aroma and flavor but still easy to drink. *<;o)) 251207) RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 5, 2008 Bottle 03077
Pours opaque with a very thin tan head. Nose is like thick sweet malts. Mild roasted texture there as well. Flavor is supremely smooth. Superb! I can’t tell at all that this is a 16% abv beer. I can’t say there is a mass of character coming off this brew. But it is just damn nice to drink. Smooth liquid feel and a slightly lower carbonation. Certainly is easy to drink. Nothing showy here at all. Just a bloody smooth RIS. If this were available all the time (and a lot cheaper), I’d be a devoted customer. A well made RIS. jasonm (22), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 4, 2008 Pours black as midnight, with zero light opacity. Surprising 2 finger width head of dark brown foam, but does not last long. Mildly sweet aroma of coffee liqueur, smooth milk chocolate, and an almost Bourbon like vanilla aroma. The alcohol bring a bit of spiciness to the nose, and there is a base earthy aroma of oak. Flavor is sweet milk chocolate, vanilla and dark fruit, Bourbon quality as with the aroma. A bit of banana esters as well. Reminds me a bit of Bell’s Expedition on steroids. Slight bittering of baking chocolate and hops on the finish. Smooth and decadent feel, buoyed by the continual heat of alcohol throughout. Definitely not shy in the flavor or alcohol department. Savor over time, and share with friends. The alcohol is big, but complements the big malt flavor and doesnt overwhelm. Its actually got a nice overall smoothness to it, even with the prominent alcohol LeopoldStoch (201), Green, Ohio, USA Feb 3, 2008 Bottle thanks to Solan. Thanks Alan! Poured a super dark viscous black color. A little bit of dark brown head on the initial pour that quickly receded. The mouthfeel if very full and thick...very enjoyable for the huge stout that it is. The flavor is a pretty good mix of chocolates, dark malts, and a nice presence of coffee in the final stages. Overall a really solid impy stout, but I had to knock it on the flavor end because of the obscene amount of strong alcohol and booziness of it towards the end of each sip. I understand it was 16% but it was still fairly overwhelming for me. Really good beer, but needs a lot of time to age, and it is a pretty expensive beer. There are several other impy stouts I would buy before this one. With all that said it is still a good brew that I enjoyed. Thanks Alan! Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 30, 2008 Sampled at the RBPG; bottle courtesy of mtoast. Wonderful aroma of coffee, light smoky, malty chocolate, oak and vanilla with sweet alcoholic vapors. A bit of balsamic tang. Dark black with no head. Thick and oily body with low carbonation; smooth and silky. Starts sweet with chocolate and coffee, warming by alcohol; comforting vanilla and oak. Very light roasted bitterness at the finish. Really nice impy stout and would be great to sample in a few more years.
