Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Bottle thanks to Solan. Thanks Alan! Poured a super dark viscous black color. A little bit of dark brown head on the initial pour that quickly receded. The mouthfeel if very full and thick...very enjoyable for the huge stout that it is. The flavor is a pretty good mix of chocolates, dark malts, and a nice presence of coffee in the final stages. Overall a really solid impy stout, but I had to knock it on the flavor end because of the obscene amount of strong alcohol and booziness of it towards the end of each sip. I understand it was 16% but it was still fairly overwhelming for me. Really good beer, but needs a lot of time to age, and it is a pretty expensive beer. There are several other impy stouts I would buy before this one. With all that said it is still a good brew that I enjoyed. Thanks Alan!

Sampled at the RBPG; bottle courtesy of mtoast. Wonderful aroma of coffee, light smoky, malty chocolate, oak and vanilla with sweet alcoholic vapors. A bit of balsamic tang. Dark black with no head. Thick and oily body with low carbonation; smooth and silky. Starts sweet with chocolate and coffee, warming by alcohol; comforting vanilla and oak. Very light roasted bitterness at the finish. Really nice impy stout and would be great to sample in a few more years.

500mL bottle. Second time I’ve had this, still just way too boozy and thin. What I don’t understand is how great the body was on their Porter and how far they missed the mark on this. I understand that if you’re gonna make a beer 16%, you don’t want it to be chewy, but FFS this is like drinking vodka spiked chocolate infused coffee.

Nice looking black pour with s tan head (and one of the coolest looking bottles around). Aroma has massive amounts of chocolate, coffee, dark berries, Cabernet Sauvingon, wood.....Flavor starts out so silky smooth with espresso and rich chocolate. Some nice wood, earth, berries and hops. Only thing holding it back is the alcohol taste and burn. Mouthfeel is nice, but should be better in a few years. Good stuff - I applaud the attempt and find this one to have many of the same qualities of a WWS or Expedition, its just not quite there yet. Kinda rough for the $$. What a beer.

Thanks Hart for bringing this to our gathering, I waited all day for this one. Aroma was strong licorice and coffee. Pour was a deep dark brown/black with no head. Taste was mostly alcohol-whiskey-ish with a bitter coffee aftertaste that barely is able to peek above the alcohol fire on the back of the throat. That is expected in a beer of this strength, though. Not bad for such a big beer. I’d like to try this with a couple years on it.

(50cl bottle) Small brown head atop black body with brown edges. Aroma is moderately sweet, roast/coffee, some vinous/whisky, grapefruit, dark chocolate, raisin, light burnt, plum. Taste is sweet, dark chocolate, vinous, espresso/roast, some whisky boozy, molasses, faint anise. Creamy full body, low carbonation. A very enjoyable sipping beer, great for sharing or, better yet, having to yourself.

Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 1/27/2008 Pittsburgh ratebeer.com gathering upstairs, Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I am invited again and I see a spread of bottles like I did there - ever again. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we sampled! For example, how about this beer; Dark Horizon first edition. Strongish alky aroma that is alarming but smells better than most high alky brews. Black as coal but not as viscous as I would have expected. No carbonation what so ever. IMHO, not a beer, more like whiskey or wine. Over the top whiskey and coffee, tastes somewhat like the coffee grampah Laurenzi used to drink after work and dinner. Perfect example of the style but does not rate high on my lager lovin enjoyability scale!
