Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Batch number 1, 16 oz. brown, longneck bottle. Bottle #01097. Paid $17.35 for this at Astor Liquors. It better be worth every cent too. Small pfftt when opened. Poured out a dark chocolate brown, with a sticky mocha colored head. It left a slick coating down the sides of my Duvel tulip glass. Aromas are of roasted espresso, dark chocolate truffles, slight oak barrel. Molasses & licorice round out the aromas. Flavors are of licorice, treacle syrup, molasses, dark baking chocolate, roasted malts, burnt sugars. Thick mouthfeel, rich and chewy. Alcohol is well hidden in the flavor, but it does sneak up on you later on. Finished somewhat sweet & roasty. Really good example of a RIS, but not worth the money overall.

My first beer of the new year. I wish I could have one every day . Pour black with subtle red highlights and a big brown head. The aroma is to complex to describe. This stouts aroma blew my mind.Coffee, chocolate, cherries, currants, alcohol, caramel and so much more. I was amazed that a 16% beer could hide the alcohol so well. Flavor was similar to the aroma. Medium to full bodied. One of the best I have ever had. Thanks Nogne.

Aroma of good coffee and alcohol fumes. Tia Maria, only thicker. Pours very black, with aged look of white head on top. Drinks medium plus mouthfeel, a coffee liquor, rich, and kind of one-dimensional. Smooth, with chocolate aftertaste and sediment.500 ml. in fancy container at $22 plus $1.50 duty from Premiere Gourmet. Sipper.

This bottled brew from a rating party at bdigi66’s was marked edition 04071 and poured a small sized head of foamy brown colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind a opaque no visible carbonation black colored body and a fair lacing. The nice aroma was brown malt roasted malt toasted malt and dark malt. The smooth mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start mediumly tingly at the finish with a biting dark malt aftertaste. . A wonderful best in class brew.

big thanks to zeswaft and congratulations on rating 1000. pitch black and headless. aroma is alcohol all over. really reminds me of the barrel-aged fest. woody, lots of sweet rotten fruit aroma. there’s gotta be a better word than rotten. flavor is excellently balanced, and the alcohol dramatically well hidden compared to the aroma. chocolate/vanilla/caramel are there, but the imperial stout character is second fiddle to stronger fruit tones. pretty damn well done. palate is brilliant and drinkable. excellent beer.

1000th rating. That was one hell of a ride. Thick black with almost no brown head. Very vinous aroma, alcohol, and some chocolate. Surprisingly smooth for 16% abv. Perfect amount of carbonation. I get a lot of boozy hard alcohol flavors. This is a pretty good imp stout especially for 16% but i’d take expedition over this any day.
