Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Many thanks to Mike for breaking out this bad boy! Poured black with light brown edges and just a touch of head sticking around. The aroma had lots of dark chocolate and molasses with drier caramel and boozy pine accents.. more chocolate as it warmed up.. warm, sweet, and quite delightful! The flavor had lots of well-roasted sweeter chocolates and deeper black malts with more boozy chocolatey sweetness behind.. picked up some molasses on the back-end along with simple and alcohol sugars.. long, warm chocolatey finish. Thick on the palate and hot, but certainly not more than expected considering the ABV.. sticky and a little raw on the finish.

Bottle shared by kmweaver. Pitch black body with a small, creamy tan head, lasting cover. The nose is rum, raisins, molasses, chocolate, coffee and alcohol. The flavor is moderately sweet with prunes, caramel, milk chocolate, espresso, roast and light floral hops. Full body is sticky and soft with a warm finish and light carbonation. Surprisingly nice.

Typical appearance for an imperial stout with nice khaki colored head. Rich aroma with notes of port, caramel, cherries and hints of coffee. Light roast, molasses, cherries and alcohol are predominant flavors. Light notes of milk chocolate and coffee round out the flavor. Alcohol is apparent, but not harsh. A nice treat, but I don’t know if it is good enough for me to shell out the money for it again.

Very dark, strong beer. For the extreme alcohol content, it is somewhat smooth, but needs to age awile. to smooth out the strong taste of alcohol. Could have been a bit more balanced, but is still a special brew.

Rating #2000! Bottle#01192. Pours ebony black, solid, thick like oil. The head will form on a strong pour, but quickly fades away. Nose of chocolate, raisin, molasses, coffee cake, vanilla. Flavor starts with a quick sweet jolt of sweet cherry and rum raisin. Molasses notes stick to the palate, bakers chocolate and espresso linger behind in the aftertaste. The 16% abv is unreal, while strong flavored, the alcohol is very well hidden. You can feel the alcohol after you drink in the chest, but not boozy in any way. Amazing beer all around, now to save up to buy another to age.

Sweet malty aroma. Dark, dark brown with dark brown head. Very good flavor changes, complex. Dark Licorice, thick and syrupy. Sweet, smoky, and rich and bitter mix. Very good overall. Thanks to Iowa Herkeye for this one.

Dark beer with reddish hints around the edge and a thin slick of brown foam on the surface. Huge supple nose of sweet molassess, coffee and alcohol. Slick mouthfeel with flavors of sweetened coffee, molassess, toffee, raisen and pepper. The coffee bitterness is really apparent when you inhale. Excellent sipping beer.
