Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Bottle 04071 courtesy jsquire: Big thanks Jeff. Pours pitch black with a ruby halo and no head. Fine dark chocolate malt, espresso, plums, raisins impart their will on the senses. Full bodied mouth feel. Flavor consists of dark chocolate, espresso and dark fruits. Has a very vinous quality to it and the alcohol, at 16% was fairly well masked. Awesome brew.

Pitch black with one of the darkest heads I’ve seen. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, molasses, whiskey, vanilla. The molasses seems to appear twice, with the second coming being very sweet. The body on this beer is silky smooth. One of the nicest bodies I’ve had. Roasted coffee, chocolate, malty, molasses, some vanilla, anise. The alcohol is so well hidden. Insanely smooth chocolate and coffee. Finish is strong roasted. The alcohol only shows up when it warms you over. No real alcohol taste. I’d be happy drinking only this the rest of my life. Unfortunatly, I’ll compare all future imperials to this one; and they’ll most likely lose.

Deep black color, though not quite to motor oil levels, with no head. Wonderful aroma of sweet malt, wine and a spice that seemed like nutmeg, but almost gingerbread-like. The taste is incredible. The sweet malt is offset by a slight roastiness and a pinch of hop bitterness. Grapes abound. Moderate coffee. More spice. Perhaps even a bit of salt. Some chocolate. This is almost sensory overload in the most glorious way. Absolutely fantastic.

Bottle. Sampled at PP Strong Ale Fest 07, brought by a generous Ratebeerian. Pitch black pour with a tan head. Roasted malt aroma with some licorice and tons of alcohol. Warming, chocolate malt flavors with more licorice notes. VERY hot! Lingering finish.

Bottle shared by iowaherkeye. Thanks again Joey. Poured a nearly opaque black color with only some red getting through along the edge of the glass. Attractive aroma of molasses, anise, chocolate liqueur, raisin, and a whiff of cherry. The alcohol was warm and while it made it’s presence known, I wouldn’t have guessed it was 16%. I detected a hint of smoke, but the dominant flavors were a nice mixture of coffee, chocolate, raisin, and fig. The smooth, oily texture was just another element that made this one a home run.

Thanks doclock. The color was deep black. The head was thin, medium tan, fizzy, and creamy. The aroma was sweet malt, alcohol, coffee, roast, and chocolate. The flavor was strong alcohol, molasses, coffee malt, roast, and vanilla. The palate was smooth. The finish was roasty.

Thanks doclock. Pours black with a fizzy tan head. Has more of a crackly carbonation than I expected. The aroma is very rich, strong, vinous, alcohol, sweet fruit, Belgian candy sugars, figs, coffee, . The flavor is very rich and warm. Wow, very warm dry alcohol, sweet fruits, chocolate and coffee liqueur, Belgian brown sugar, vinous. Warm soft full palate, velvety warm dry mouthfeel and lasting warmth. Delicious interpretation of an RIS.

Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry and Blankboy, courtesy of Harry, many many thanks! Cray appearance - pitch black, big dark rich brown head with hints - really neat. Aroma featuring sweet rich malt, chocolate, some nuttiness, simply stunning. Taste is even better - so rich, roof of your mouth nuttiness, tons and tons of rich dark chocolate and roast. Alcohol, somehow, not really there. Silky full body. Quite incredible really, Harry picked up another bottle for me (thank you!!) which my wife and I will be sharing next week to celebrate our son’s first birthday - special occasion, special beer.
