Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Dark color. Smell of alcohol, chocolate cake, double chocolate truffles, hops, caramel, malt, tobacco, smoke, vanilla, roasted coffee, spice and brown sugar. Tastes the same but what I really like was the alcohol taste. It was like drinking straight up chocolate liquor. Very nice Impy stout. I cant believe that I spent $20, but it was well worth it.

Pour initially gives up a small brown head, fades quickly to a dark ring with some whispy trails left behind. This brew is black, period. Nose of dark fruits, raisins and maybe some plummy notes, berryish with a faint bit of roast and alcohol. Body? Med/full, large and oily on the palate, warming, coating and smothering. Faint flavors of chocolate and roast. Coffee? Plenty of alcohol flavor though, too much so. The alcohol becoming MUCH more evident as it warms, mouth puckering, almost astringent. Very warming, notes of licorice evolve but are overshadowed by the alc. content. Gettin hot. The alcohol seems to crush any flavors that are noticed initially. Big, warming alcoholly finish. An interesting brew that i will try again, but fairly disappointing really. Does,nt have the finesse of a DFHWWS from what i can remember. Another Impy. i need to go back to. Oh yea, good buzz factor! Bottle procured @ statelineliquors. Props to Robert for workin his ass off to get ahold of this one! Thanks dude!

Black. Very black. Thick brown head. Insane aroma of... well, everything; coffee, fruit, chocolate, liquorice. Flavor follows suit and is rich with everything. Except alcohol, if you consider the massive 16% ABV, but you can definitely feel the warmth. Still a bit edgy, as it has everything and probably softens up with some aging. Luckily I have a few bottles in store...

Wow! HUGE thanks to Mac300 for sharing this very pricey beer with me. I really put this beer in a league with only two other *Super imperial* Stouts when it comes to abv, World Wide Stout & Mephistopheles’ Stout. I have not had a vintage Mephistopheles’ but WWS is one of my favorites. Mephistopheles’ on the other hand actually gets a bit hot, at least in the fresh version. Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon is amazingly approachable and surprisingly drinkable for a 16% beer. Don’t be fooled by my 5.0 drinkability. This is a sipping but in this league is creme-de-la-creme. It lack the super heavy maltyness of Dark Lord, the glass lining heaviness and sticky body, but this is one I would drink for a nightcap every night, where Dark Lord is a special occasion beer. Now, on to the break down. Appearance: Pours a gorgeous black. Pure pitch black as nigh black into my snifter with a small brown head that fades to a cap. Smell: Chocolate figs grapes prune rum fudge roasted malts dark dark purple grapes coffee and splash of vanilla and milk. Taste: Everything in the nose and more. It is hot and boozy and yet not too much so. The big alcoholic nature of the beer is balanced by the rich creamy cocoa and the dark fruits. Chocolate liquor, mmm. It is just sweet enough and the espresso and bitter chocolate just sends my taste-buds into a frenzy. Magnificent! Mouthfeel: It is certainly hot. The high alcohol shows through at a very enjoyable degree. It is not as thick as I would have suspected but rather light for all the rich syrup flavors. The cinnamon ginger and oak along with the alcohol leave may palate coated with lively flavors and surprising crispness. Drinkability: Down right LEATHAL! The biggest obstacle I have with this beer is that I am not independently wealthy yet. If I were, I may commit suicide by Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon, not on purpose but this is a very nice nightcap, just remember, be careful! Hope this is helpful. Cheers!

One of the best chocolate high alchol brews I have ever had. Thanks Kingpin. Smooth creamy bakers chocolate in aroma, with sugary caramel cake, touches of vanilla. Sniffed at it for a minute it was so enticing. Taste was a plush rush of overr chocolately black forest cake , caramel and toffee and an extremely mellow backing of alcohol. Absolutely outstanding, damn that high price

Bottle thanks to jasonmech: Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma, sweet boozy notes, chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits, the alcohol is a bit strong in the nose. Flavor, chocolate, some boozy notes, roasted malts, with a roasty bitterness on the end. Nice and full bodied, only a light carbonation. Very nice.

Bottle: Huge chocolate plum aroma with light vanilla and moderate alcohol that burns the nose a little. It pours black with a small brown head. The flavor starts with a huge dose of sweet chocolate and plum. Behind all the sweetness there a light roasted coffee and roasted malt finish. There isn’t a big alcohol flavor, but there is a light burn. Big slick oily mouthfeel with mild soft carbonation.
