Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Bottle #05403. Many thanks to Yesper for this treat. A nose that reminds me of a big thick wine with a faint undercurrent reminiscent of roasted malts, though none of the chocolate or coffee I would have suspected. Opaque brown/black body with plenty of rich brown head that regrettably was gone within a minute. A strong port character on the flavor that delves quickly into alcohol induced warmth that hides the hight ABV well. Sweet, but far from cloying and a wonderfully thick texture. The flavor soon yielded a dry finish with just a faint hint of coffee. As the taste lingered on my tongue, roasted malts and coffee make themselves more apparent, along with a faint return to the sweetness noted earlier. The Columbian beens didn’t make much of an appearance other than a well blended coffee flavor that never dominated the beer. The warmer the beer gets, the more roasted character emerges in the flavor. The nose opens up as well, becoming more complex in its port wine like character with dark fruit aromas opening up.

(bottle) Pours black with a non-existent head, even with agitation. The aroma is incredibly complex and begins with scents of port and red wine, along with raisins. As the beer warms however, a nice roasted coffee smell complements the more wine-like smells, and the two blend together, soy sauce makes an appearance as well along with a faint boozy smell. The taste was very sweet initially, and was very fruity with a roasted finish. After the beer warmed however there was some soy sauce, and the ever present slight tingle of carbonation in alcohol that followed the sweetness, which was then rounded out with some coffee roastiness on the finish. The mouthfeel was thick, and my only knock on the beer would be that the finish is just a bit too short. As olso2116 said, this beer is very reminiscent of 04 Speedway, but a phenomenal beer nonetheless.

[Bottle] Pours black with a very small dark tan head. A lot going on with the aroma--chocolate, raisins, red wine, brown sugar, roasted malt, and alcohol. Taste is very sweet up front. This is followed by chocolate, alcohol and a very nice blend of roasted malt and chocolate for the finish. I almost gave a 5 on palate, I really debated whether or not to, but the finish was just a little too short to do it. It was, however, nice and thick and very smooth. This was a very complex and exceptional beer. It reminded me a lot of an ’04 Speedway that I had earlier this year...only a tiny bit better.

Bottle. Aroma dark roasted malts, anise, chocolate and coffee. Poured a delicious black with a thin dark chocolate head. Flavor was coffee, anise and sugary. Palate is full and oily slick and the bitterness is ever so nice. The alcohol is just slightly noticed but well masked in the slickness of this brew. Overall, a truely tasty bottle.

Bottle #02173 shared with Drewbeerme, xnoxhatex and Johnycorkscrew for Devon’s birthday. Pours a dark black with a tan head that faded to a ring quickly. The nose is just phenomenal. So many layers of burnt malts, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, anise, toffee, dough, and alcohol. The flavors have all of those complexities sugars, burnt bitterness and too much alcohol for me. Granted its 16% abv, and it could have more burn, but what it has is too much. If this would mellow out after two years, this could be one amazing beer, but at its current state, it is overbearing.

Bottle. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and a pleasant honey sweetness. Just a hint of alcohol. Pours jet black. Oily. Think khaki head with amber highlights. Flavor was dominated by malt and coffee. Some licorice, and chocolate. Very pleasant alcohol warmth, but hides the 16% very well. Amazing texture! Full bodied, creamy and smooth as silk!

May 09... this one has definitely peaked and is going down hill. The mouth feel isn’t nearly as viscous and smooth as it was fresh. Still a great impy, but drink now...

Odense Tasting at Christian Scheffel ’s palace: Pitch black with creamy brown head. The aroma is fabolous. Dark roasted malts & fruits. Chocolate, cofeee, toffee & alcohol. Alcohol is very well hidden. Only light warmth. This reminds me of Avery’s Mephiopheles stout. Sticky & oily palate. Smooth & thick. Long finish!! Extremely good & breathtaking!

Black with a disappearing light brown head. Intense and complex aroma with caramel, toffee, chocolate, licorice and some alcohol. It’s sweet, but it’s well balanced by both roast malt and hops bitterness and alcohol.
