This may not make any sense but it reminded me of an imperial stout barleywine. Amazing beer. MrBendo (1042), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 28, 2007 Bottle. Near black pour with a very small head. Aroma of roasted coffee, liquorice, burnt malt and a little grassy hops. Flavor is roasted/burnt malts and coffee with a touch of dark fruit sweetness. Rich and full body. Warm finish, but how can there not be? Could use a year or two in the cellar. Glouglouburp (2811), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 27, 2007 The look: Black body with a tan ring of foam.
The style: Roasted and alcoholised Imperial Stout
The stuff: Brought back by Rastacouere from his European tour. Very sweet, body is heavier than expected, still very young but will probably be classier in a few years from now. But enough talking about Rastacouere since he came back from Europe, let me tell you about the beer. Highly roasted beer. Burnt toasts flavour. Rich chocolate cake flavour warm alcohol gives the impression of a hot chocolate. Very strong carbonation. According to the commercial description this is supposed to be a coffee stout. I only got coffee hints as a comeback after a sip. Strong alcohol presence as expected. Hints of dark fruits. Mainly this is alcoholised roasted cake. Earlier that night we had the Närke Kaggen Stormaktsporter and I thought its #1 beer status was disputable. However seeing this Dark Horizon in the top 15 is just mind numbing. Still, I liked it a lot.
The how: Back from Japan tasting at MartinT. Bottle from Rastacouere
The conclusion: A very good slap-in-the-face stout, almost excellent. Overrated. I will let my bottle (thanks larsga) sit for a few years and we’ll re-evaluate. hopscotch (5469), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

Pours pitch black with a small, wispy, beige head. Small ring of creamy retention. The nose is a swirl of chocolate cake batter, black cherries, blueberries, espresso, vanilla and brandy. Sweet, bold flavor of dark chocolate, caramel, ethanol, licorice and berries. Barely full-bodied with a silky and then chalky mouthfeel. Lively carbonation. Blindingly sweet, then bitter and then “red-hot” finish. Liquid intensity! Need to find another bottle to lie down for a few years. MartinT (5050), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 22, 2007 My Bottom Line:
This Gargantuan Imperial Stout proffers enough dark chocolate, raisins and roastiness to sculpt a worthy shrine to the style, and its seamless oesophagus-heating alcohol will make sure that you get to your knees quickly to worship it.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam skirts the pitch black.
-Coffee mostly appears after the swallow, alongside the roasted malt bitterness, but it doesn’t really contribute to the beer’s aroma.
-Minty notes seem to latch on to the alcohol.
-I would not say this is better than other Nogne O strong ales; it is definitely as solid and as rewarding as their Batch 100, their Imperial Stout, their Saison, their Imperial Brown Ale, etc.
-Carbonation is quite active in this one, which is surprising for such a mammoth. It truly increases the beer’s drinkability, and for that alone I think it’s a wonderful (although dangerous) idea.

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 21, 2007 I can’t thank my friend sunevdj enough for the chance to try this one, BIG THANKS Sune! Bottle #05082. Pours a syrupy dark black with a moderate dark brown creamy head, no notable lacing. Bold aroma of espresso, cocoa, molasses, licorice and dark fruits, that blends together and opens up nicely in the glass as it warms. Flavor supports the aroma nicely, bringing everything together to a well developed conclusion, with some slight warming and a lasting gentle bitterness. Wow, very nice stuff! Pre-bottling sample from Ingvar. Huge thanks! Pours an inky brown that gives up a brief tan froth. Clear around the edges. Nose is rich with chocolate, coffee, molasses and vanilla-caramel. Heady stuff. Taste starts with mocha and raisin. A shot of grapefruit juice then a growing alcohol numbing. Bitter piney finish with bits of salty licorice. Light carb, medium light body. Aggressive stuff; i like it. GreatLibations (1441), Last Supper, Arizona, USA
| 5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Sep 15, 2007 Updated: Nov 13, 2007Bottle # 1994 pours black and I mean black. A nice medium sized froth rises and slowly reduces to a fine, silky canopy and a fluffy spattered ring. Aromas of butcher roasted sweet malts, dark chocolate, and brandy. Nice! A viscous nectar goes down w/ ample effers that create a creamy sensation. Awsome! Huge, intense, profound! This brew is extreme. A gigantic malty backbone w/ a spine tingling roast component come alive on this big screen adventure, and I do mean adventure. The alcohol component pierces my palate like a knife yet is not apperant in flavor, just sensation. It cuts through the blubber blancing it all out. Cocoa, molases, roasted coffee bean, vanilla, hot cinnamon sticks. Drinks good cold or warm w/ no off flavors or aromas anywhere. The finish, well, it really doesn’t. It’s bittered, if you will, with a strict alcohol burn that clears the palate of the debre and keeps me ready but only after a breath or two. You have to take deep breaths between sipps. Overall: This is the strongest flavored yet balanced beer i’ve had to date. The high alcohol content stings like a good Cognac on the palate then lets in the heavy roasted coffee and chocolate to do their fancy stepwork. I totally agree with the hype and I will buy more, even at the $20 price tag. I highly recommend this to all of you who appreciate strong beers.
