Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

I thought this would be my first 4.9. Shit. Yet another product of nbutler11’s weasel farm. Opens with a glossy aroma of dark chocolate brownie, date, ephemeral alcohol. Color is such that light gives it no apparent color, even at the edges. Head is cream and eventually dissipates. Flavor is a laundry list: cream, amaretto, hazelnut, almond give way to and meld with light fruit, milk chocolate, espresso, more brownie. The whole thing is packaged by the wine yeast and this really does sit and fume as if it were a chocolate coffee wine. It misses a perfect score because there is a very plain residue that this beer imparts: the same tar-ish thick nastiness of Mikkeller Black lingers and threatens to interfere with flavors. Ultimately, it improves the aroma, but interferes with the experience of the beer.

This beer for me comes in too big a bottle. It almost demands to be shared. Id love this in a 250ml like Narke Kaggen as then i could open one on my own and slowly sip and savour this to it full potential. While i find this beer stunning id struggle to finish this bottle....

Tk3 bottle 844 at home May 2009 ... deep black thin short lived tan head ... big fruity blackcurrant hop nose ... rich malt ... little fizz ... quite a lot of spirit ... little burn almost chilli... lots of chocolate ... little coffee ... lots of roasts ... little viscous ... Wonderfully rich and complex ... goes lovely with my Sausage (ooooer missus) ... mmmmm beeer

Bottle # 05108(donated by Hildigöltur!): Literally black, small to medium-sized - slowly diminishing - brownish fluffy head; sweet raisins + other dried fruits, liquorice and leather in the nose; full sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied; fruity vinous finish with added traces of coffee and liquorice. Well rounded, well drinkable "heavy" stuff..............

(50cl bottle, # 05108) Black coloured hue with a brown foamy head of medium size. Moderately sweet, strong roast-malty aroma with light notes of mocha, raisins, licorice and alcohol. Surprisingly sweet flavour, full bodied with a calm carbonation. Roast-malty taste with licorice, mocha and an almost vinous raisin-fruity touch. Sweet and slightly burnt-bitter finish with a warming alcoholic touch. Strong and pleasant (09.IV.09).

Bottle (#01369). Thick black body. Almost no head at all, but the colour was brown before it vanished. Heavy complex aroma. Malty, roasted, spicy. Flavour is really heavy, a little sweet, but relatively dry. Much malt, sweet berries, coffee. A roasted bitter and sweet finish. Too heavy for me, but interesting. Another bottle is stored. Will be interesting to see how it develops. (At home, 14.03.09)
