Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Bottle from Sloth, thanks! Dark brown, near black pour with a small brown head. Sweet aroma with light vanilla, chocolate, and a healthy roastiness. Tastes rich and smooth. Sweet, malty, dark fruit, and roasty. Chocolate and light bitters. Outstanding balance. Excellent.

Bottle at Chris_O’s 19th April 2008 tasting. Pours black with a line of tan head. Rich, malty, woody aroma, with lots of apparent alcohol (just look at the strength!) In the mouth, it’s completely full on - hefty malts, liquorice, dark fruits, musty old socks, coffee, chocolate, warming alcohol. The palate is full yet smooth. Very much an uncompromising brew. Superb.

Bottle from Jeff which I split with Garrett last night since he brought me a bunch of beer from Lost Abbey, thanks a ton both of you. Pours out a color that isnt even near brown, its just solid black. Thick tan head on it that sticks to the glass. Smells like sweet sugars, coffee, and a touch of alcohol. Tastes really good, smooth, thick, not really noticeable 16% alcohol either. Reminds me of WWS in the sweetness factor. Nice roasted coffee flavor too. Good stuff, not as good as Black Hole, but still, good stuff. Makes me want to move to Norway..

500 ml. bottle shared by and with Gregis. Bottle #01714. Pour is all black with a 1/2 inch deep tan head that fades almost immediately. Aroma begins faint, though as it warmed revealed some red wine, roasting coffee, and cooking/roasting meat. Also some alcohol heat present in the nose. Taste is very winey (Merlot / Cabernet), also a bunch of raisin fruity-malt. Big heat in the finish. Palate is medium, very flat and slick. Big wine flavors are present throughout. Very interesting effort, truly nothing like anything I have had before. Thanks for sharing this one Greg!

Thank you to my overseas trading partner oh6gdx for sending me the incredibly tasty beer. The beer boggles the mind and treats your tastebuds to an awesome beer from beginning to end. This beer really is something to behold. Luckily, I shared it with some really good peeps in aspidites, BeerDaveC007 and my brother. The beer pours out a rich, black color, sort of glooping out of the bottle like motor oil, and forms this chocolatey, dark tan head. You really don’t need to have the glass too close to your nose, as the aroma just leaps out like a wild animal in a cage. Chocolate, toffee, smoke, vanilla, port, wet dirt, a touch soy sauce, and wood. Mouthfeel is the equivelent of wearing a rabbit fur gloves. Soft, warm, supple...simply magnificent. Flavors were pretty much on the same course as the nose. It’s just an awesome beer. It’s unfair that this beer is 16% because the alcohol is so well hidden. A true testament to the professional brewer(s) who made this beer really showed the world what a beer that’s part impy stout and part barleywine can be. Thank you.

Pour initially gives up a small brown head, fades quickly to a dark ring with some whispy trails left behind. This brew is black, period. Nose of dark fruits, raisins and maybe some plummy notes, berryish with a faint bit of roast and alcohol. Body? Med/full, large and oily on the palate, warming, coating and smothering. Faint flavors of chocolate and roast. Coffee? Plenty of alcohol flavor though, too much so. The alcohol becoming MUCH more evident as it warms, mouth puckering, almost astringent. Very warming, notes of licorice evolve but are overshadowed by the alc. content. Gettin hot. The alcohol seems to crush any flavors that are noticed initially. Big, warming alcoholly finish. An interesting brew that i will try again, but fairly disappointing really. Does,nt have the finesse of a DFHWWS from what i can remember. Another Impy. i need to go back to. Oh yea, good buzz factor! Bottle procured @ statelineliquors. Props to Robert for workin his ass off to get ahold of this one! Thanks dude!
