Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Black. Very black. Thick brown head. Insane aroma of... well, everything; coffee, fruit, chocolate, liquorice. Flavor follows suit and is rich with everything. Except alcohol, if you consider the massive 16% ABV, but you can definitely feel the warmth. Still a bit edgy, as it has everything and probably softens up with some aging. Luckily I have a few bottles in store...

Bottled. Finally this beer got its release. I’ve been so lucky that I have followed it from the birth and seen it’s development. At a dinner with beer-pairings in Kristiansand, Norway, it was served with a heavy, dark chocolate dessert and single-bean coffee. It was a perfect match. It’s first impression is an almost over-whealming aroma with chocolate, coffee, alcohol, vanilla and notes of a wet wood in the summer-time. It’s body is as black as the original sin, yet it’s clear, but not see-through. The head is quite small and brown-colored. Almost like milk-chocolate. When sipped, (as you know, you don’t drink beers like this, you sip them), there’s a good dash of alcohol, but not in a bothersome way, ’cause it’s supplemented by chocolate, coffee, mocha, vanilla and some vague hints of wooden barrels. The mouthfeel is full and warming, and the beer ends in a long finish with alcohol, chocolate, cocoa-notes and coffee. It almost feels stinging, but that’s probably due to the alcohol. It feels good to finally get to enter the rating of this beer, it is (until so far) only equalled by Mikkeller’s X Imperial Stout 2006. The name indicates other editions of this beer, but can they match this one? (070317)

Bottle: Pours a thick looking dark black with a thin lasting tan head, amazingly strong coffee and dark chocolate aroma, taste is coffee, malt, dark chocoalte, the bitterness intensifies a bit in the aftertaste and there is a nice warming feeling in the throat, very smooth mouthfeel, this beer is clearly worth the hype. It cost me $20 to get one of these. I wish I could afford to buy this with regularity - might be worth getting one more to age however.

Just superb. This tastes like it might be 7-8% tops. Perfect balance. Aroma has some maple and cappuccino. Flavor is a delicious coffee and chocolate.

1st ed. #02965 -- Perfect dark body with a nice head. "Ooooohh Shit!" - aroma. Perfect ataste, hot and spicey with nice malts and a hint of dark fruit. Hot ending but not hot... spicey wiht a nice coffee chocolate balance.

500ml bottle enjoyed with great piety during a rating session in Tromsø. Served at perfect room temperature in a cognac glass. Black as pitch in body colour under an attractive dark russet foamy head with lots of small bubbles. The head is reduced to a filmy layer after a while. Intensely and beautifully aroma with massive warm chocolate offset by rounded alcohol hints. You can get a good sniff of the delicate aroma at least for ten minutes before the first sip. Depth in flavour with lots of cocoa and chocolate nuances supported by roasted tones of dark fruits, berries and liquorice. Towards the end there is even a touch of sherry and finishing hops. Warming and integrated alcohol profile in a lingering aftertaste. Velvet and luscious palate. A well made masterpiece on a very high level. I really liked the beer being not as vinous as many other editions of the style. My best beer after 800 ratings (Courtesy of Nøgne Ø and vanø) (18.04.2007).

Pitch black with one of the darkest heads I’ve seen. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, molasses, whiskey, vanilla. The molasses seems to appear twice, with the second coming being very sweet. The body on this beer is silky smooth. One of the nicest bodies I’ve had. Roasted coffee, chocolate, malty, molasses, some vanilla, anise. The alcohol is so well hidden. Insanely smooth chocolate and coffee. Finish is strong roasted. The alcohol only shows up when it warms you over. No real alcohol taste. I’d be happy drinking only this the rest of my life. Unfortunatly, I’ll compare all future imperials to this one; and they’ll most likely lose.
