3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap at VANØ 10year anniversary. Pitch black, crowned by a half inch of creamy, dark tan foam. Aroma is heavy liquorice, flanked by bitter chocolate and caramel malts. Taste is very roasty, has tonnes of liquorice and a decent bitterness. Not sweet or cloying at all. Some alcohol warmth but not much in the flavor. Body is slick and close to oily with soft carbonation A big beast of a beer, and it would be wrong to say it was very drinkable, but it is rather mellow considering the menacing ’stats’.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: NOV 12, 2013 250 ml bottle, pours black, dark chocolate, coffee aroma, brown sugar, woodiness, whisky coming through. Palate quite thin for the abv, but nice oily texture. Finish short and sweet, carbonation low to average. Nice moorish aftetaste. Very drinakble and this was much better after 6 months aging.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2014 26.05.2013, 0,25l bottle @ home:
Nice creamy brown longlasting head. Aroma is rich and balanced, dark malts, dark sugar, lots of coffee, dark fruits, caramel, cocoa, oak, licorice, a hint of alcohol and unripe bananas. Taste is sweet and rich, dark sugar, dark malts, coffee, caramel, grass, cocoa, licorice, dark fruits, oak, unripe bananas. Some warming alcohol, still well hidden. Medium bitterness, a litle dry mouthfeel. Nice one, but some storing will make it even better.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Small coarseish dark brown head. Opaque black body. Deep
chocolatey coffee aroma with spicy resiny sugary toffee notes.
Dry-sweet peppery roasty coffee taste with chocolatey earthy
notes. Full-bodied. Sharp, hot, spicy mouthfeel, particularly
at the end, and the heat lingers for a long time. Dryish oily
coffee and resin aftertaste with salty chocolate, earth and pine
needle notes. Interesting, very full of flavour, drinkable,
harmonic. I’d say it’s the second best of the four DH
beers. (0.25l bottle, wine monopoly Vika, Oslo.)

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 17 May 2013) Black colour with brief, frothy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of liquorice, black coffee, soy sauce and cocoa. Malty, roasted taste with liquorice, soy sauce, black coffee, burnt sugar, black rye bread and a generous coffee bitterness in finish with a certain alcohol glow. Full body, fairly sweet. Powerful and warming, quite impressive. Very nice.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Heavy black pour with unerving amount of CO2, heavy tan head leaving dense residue through the glass. Very thick malt, slight boozy sugar nose. Smooth enough initially, very sweet muscat and molasses with a teeth sticking mouth-feel. Biting booze as it gets close to the finish but ends with a moreish raisiny and coffee linger - dangerously drinkable, almost more deserty than anything else.

Pours nearly black. Close to no head. Very thick body. Ok carbonation. Alcohol, plum, malt, hop, dark fruit, coffee, dark chocolate aroma. Bitter. Complex, warming and maybe over the top. Needs to be served quite tempered.
