4.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle at the brewery, 14.06.14.
Black with a neat dark brown/grey head.
Taste is dry - not much sugar left. Coffee, the darkest of chocolate and licorice. Really good, despite it’s age. No oxidation.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Last bottle left from my IP Helsinki trade with tiong. About 7 years old now! Deep dark black, but not as viscous as I expected. Cola and soy jumping out of the glass from the table. More soy on the nose, some dark malts. Flavors of licorice prominent, with some dark berries and dark dried tree fruit, soy, high grade cocoa dark chocolate. Dry. Terrific imperial stout in the Scandinavian style.

There are big dark beers, and then there are BIG DARK beers. While DH1 has a sweetness and depth that I have never tatsed anywhere else, DH2 has a fantastic complexity and dangerous drinkability.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Traded bottle into a snifter. Pours like motor oil with a thin brown head. The aroma is dark fruit and rum-like booziness. Flavor is like a cross between red wine and a coffee stout. Big beer: a little goes a long way. The alcohol masks a lot of the other flavors unfortunately.

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2014 Brewed 2007-11-05. Thanks anttti!
Totally black beer with a brown head disappearing quite quickly. Aroma has chocolaty and liquery sweetness with roastiness. Flavor is sweet with licoricy, salmiakki, roasted malts and some alcohol. Has a long smooth finish with little bitterness. Very full wine like palate. Actually the whole drinking experience is very red wine like. Slight alcohol when warmed up. Well aged beer, totally enjoyable.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rated on 9-25-2009 at Fort Wayne, IN Gathering. This bottled beer pours a very small light brown head with good retention, opaque dark brown body and spotty amounts of lacing. The Aroma is roasted malt, dark fruits, alcohol and HOT!! The Taste is HOT, HOT HOT, roasted malt, and alcohol. The Palate is HOT on the tongue and this beer is full bodied. Overall, this beer is a sipping beer without a doubt. The ABV is VERY noticeable and this beer is just too HOT to drink a lot of it. It is worth trying nonetheless.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Not surprisingly this thick, viscous-looking, black bodied beer doesn’t have much of a head, just a few, brown bubbles that disappear within seconds. Some bubbles survive at the walls of the glass, but they leave no lacing. The aroma is intense, sweet and remarkably pleasant! It’s not as violent as I had imagined. It’s roasted all right, but not burnt, and the coffee notes are really subtle. The sweeter, gentle notes of chocolate of dark caramel are much more present. I also get traces of alcohol, but in a very well integrated and vinous way. The intense flavours very much follow the aroma, with chocolate and dark caramel in front, roasted coffee in the back and additional traces of dark dried fruits. It’s amazing how Nøgne has managed to cram 16% ABV into this extraordinarily well balanced brew, the alcohol is close to perfectly integrated and simply makes the finish quite warming. There initial taste is rather heavy sweet, but that’s no match for the quite heavy bitter and long-lasting finish. The body is of course full, the texture is thick and oily and to my surprise there is much more carbonation than the looks led me to believe, although it is of course soft. A wonderful beer in 2103, it’s hard to imagine that this one is supposed to have been even better.
