4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma: malolactic, port, vanilla, dark chocolate, dark malts – delicious. Slightly of coffee (delicious), hot but cool. Slightly towards a cognac-like aroma. Hops can be deiscerned, but not easily. Lovely, but definitely towards a sweet and sophisticated porter/port-realm. Some woody funkiness and vague peatiness comes through, reminds me of watered Laphroaig och Lagavulin. Nice!
Flavour: Initial roastiness followed by hot, alcoholic maltbitterness. Syrup and fine dark chocolate. Slightly towards espresso but with a very smooth bitterness. Fruitiness lingers in the mouth. Nutty, reminiscent of walnuts. Slightly vetegable aftertaste from the hops. Not bad, but should’ve been a bit more ‘fresh’. Given the lack of real bitterness that for example Mikkeller Black has (now that we’re talking extreme impys) the alcohol strength and sweetness is a bit too much for it to be perfectly balanced. Could’ve gone towards a more extreme roast and hopping. It’s hard to pinpoint where the fruityness comes from, or what it is like. I’d compare it to old apples, pears or posibly rosehip. Hard to pinpoint…
After a while, the sweetness is more obvious and hits you first of all with every sip.
Appearance: Black with a brown rind, dark greyish brown head and yellowish lacing. Looks more brutal than it tastes.
Palate: Very smooth, creamy and oily. Superb!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
From notes. Tasted on 6/30/12 at the 1st Annual Chimipalooza, from a 500mL bottle that I shared. Pours inky black with a thin brown head that slowly disappears to nothing. The nose has a heat kick with molasses, dark chocolate, and a touch of smoke. The flavor is quite a bit smokier with the same lightly sweet molasses and bitter dark chocolate and coffee. The body is massive with light carbonation and a long dark chocolate and bitter coffee finish, with plenty of alcoholic heat.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle 0.5l at Pikkulintu, Helsinki. #02263. Colour is black with very small brownish white head. Aromas and flavors: Coffee, licorice, hints of salt, some dark chocolate and roasted malts. Elements of red wine, nice soft little bit of oily palate, absolutely massive, beautiful monster, can’t find any marks of aging. Wonderful experience. Some burning in throat and my face is warming, 0.5l of this is pleasant challenge.

4.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle at the brewery, 14.06.14.
Black with a neat dark brown/grey head.
Taste is dry - not much sugar left. Coffee, the darkest of chocolate and licorice. Really good, despite it’s age. No oxidation.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Last bottle left from my IP Helsinki trade with tiong. About 7 years old now! Deep dark black, but not as viscous as I expected. Cola and soy jumping out of the glass from the table. More soy on the nose, some dark malts. Flavors of licorice prominent, with some dark berries and dark dried tree fruit, soy, high grade cocoa dark chocolate. Dry. Terrific imperial stout in the Scandinavian style.

There are big dark beers, and then there are BIG DARK beers. While DH1 has a sweetness and depth that I have never tatsed anywhere else, DH2 has a fantastic complexity and dangerous drinkability.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Traded bottle into a snifter. Pours like motor oil with a thin brown head. The aroma is dark fruit and rum-like booziness. Flavor is like a cross between red wine and a coffee stout. Big beer: a little goes a long way. The alcohol masks a lot of the other flavors unfortunately.
