4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
(Bottled) Almost black with no head. Extremely malty aroma, but no soy sauce. Coffee, port, licorice hints, surprisingly dry. Intensely malty, slightly burning alcohol, still no soy sauce, not as sweet as #1, quite complex despite the alcohol. Full and thick body, no carbonation. More alcoholic than #1, but not as sweet. Interesting to see how it develops, and have to resample at home.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Not surprisingly this thick, viscous-looking, black bodied beer doesn’t have much of a head, just a few, brown bubbles that disappear within seconds. Some bubbles survive at the walls of the glass, but they leave no lacing. The aroma is intense, sweet and remarkably pleasant! It’s not as violent as I had imagined. It’s roasted all right, but not burnt, and the coffee notes are really subtle. The sweeter, gentle notes of chocolate of dark caramel are much more present. I also get traces of alcohol, but in a very well integrated and vinous way. The intense flavours very much follow the aroma, with chocolate and dark caramel in front, roasted coffee in the back and additional traces of dark dried fruits. It’s amazing how Nøgne has managed to cram 16% ABV into this extraordinarily well balanced brew, the alcohol is close to perfectly integrated and simply makes the finish quite warming. There initial taste is rather heavy sweet, but that’s no match for the quite heavy bitter and long-lasting finish. The body is of course full, the texture is thick and oily and to my surprise there is much more carbonation than the looks led me to believe, although it is of course soft. A wonderful beer in 2103, it’s hard to imagine that this one is supposed to have been even better.

500 ML bottle
dark brown color, bordering on black. Thin collar of light brown film. Thick looking and slightly syrupy looking.
Big nose. Oak, licorice, balsamic Vinegar, smoked and roasted malts with a touch of soy sauce. Lots of booze for the age of this.
Taste is oak, licorice, coffee, slight smoke but more roasted malts, touches of soy. Some pine notes still with this. Has aged quite well.
Feel is rich and thick. Lots of booze still. Low carbonation and a big body. Smooth though. I thought a lot like Black Tuesday without the barrel component. Fun to drink but dangerous

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
(2/2012) bottle. I remember this being quite oaky. Otherwise yet another nice RIS from nögne. I’m actually surprised at the low score. But, it was during a RIS tasting so I guess I could afford to be picky.
