3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 esox (862) - Oulu, FINLAND - OCT 27, 2012
Bottled. Almost black, minimal tan head. Intense cold coffee aroma, dark chocolate, salty tarness, woody sherry notes, and dark ripes. And a good punch of rum-like alcohol. Very sweet, slightly milk sugary, herbal/resiny bitter finish. It seems to have complexity, but sugar masks almost everything. Full, sugary body, low carbonation, slightly sticky and alcoholic.

Pours dark black. Aroma of wet dog and booze. This one comes on hot! Very warming on the palate with some burnt chocolate and misty booze. This was okay, but a bit much for me even though I tend to enjoy string beers.

This beer looks and smells FANTASTIC but where it falls short is the cloyingly sweet finish that is very hard to stomache. Aroma is sweet coffee almost like a desert liquor. Taste is abrasively boozy and sweet making me want to chase it with a Pale ale or something.

UPDATED: SEP 22, 2012
25 cl bottle.
There is still quite strong salmiac aroma, some intense honey and syrup notes as well. Very sweet sugary and syrupy flavor and caramel on the finish. Seems (with no surprise) that two years isn’t nearly enough to smoothen the overly sweet tones. The alcohol stays fairly well hidden though. I’ll get back to this again after a few years.
25 cl bottle.

Pours pitch black color with a small beige head. Aroma of liquorice, some salmiac notes, sweet chocolate, dark toasted malts and caramel. Flavor of sweet caramel malts, dark chocolate, coffee notes, tar, liquorice, salmiac and some peat. Very oily and thick texture, too sweet so fresh, have to cellar this for some years.

Too much coffee and licorice, tastes and smells more like a liquor-ish drink. NOT my style of beer. Sorry.
