4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 ClubGonzo (1736) - Bergen, NORWAY - MAY 25, 2010
Had this for Christmas this year, but that was just before I started to get seriously hooked on rating every single beer I drink. Thus, I had to give it a second go, although it now cost me twice the money since the only place to get it these days are in pubs. Oh well. Pours a deep brown body, almost black, with a foamy caramel head. Smell is of burnt almonds, dark malts and raisins, with hints of clove. Very drinkable and delicious palate. Smooth and yet determined taste; sweet dark malts, some dried fruits and a nice, hay-like hop bitterness to balance. Hints of clove, pepper and smoked wood. Some clove, ginger, herbs, coffee. Can be sipped as well as drank a bit faster, like a good porter. God Jul is one of the most complex Xmas beers I’ve had; barely staying within the Scandinavian seasonal tradition while still branching elegantly into new territory. Finely done, Nøgne Ø.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 bluebetty (820) - AUSTRALIA - MAY 19, 2010
Bottle. Pours a deep mahogany with a creamy tan coloured head. Quite oily appearance with plenty of lacing as the head slowly dies away. Great looking beer. Aromas of choclate, toasted malt and sweet caramel. Some spiciness comes through as the beer warms. Yep really enjoying this so far. Flavours of sweet malt and caramel up front, this is then followed by coffee and finishes off with more off that spiciness. Mouthfeel is quite full and creamy. Great beer
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 JulienHuxley (1061) - Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 15, 2010
Bottle. Muddy black/brown with lasting thick head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, hops, burned toast. Also some dark fruits and cinnamon/nutmeg. Flavors are reminiscent of an IS but a little sweeter : roasted coffee, chocolate, brown sugar and toffee. Medium rich palate with appropriate carbonation. Once again, this a very interesting and hard to classify brew from Nogne.

opaque dark mahogany, lasting thick creamy tan head, creamy medium body.
aroma: charred chocolate malt.
taste: very chocolaty and slightly charred malt all the way through. a little bit of leafy hop flavor toward the bottom.
comes across like a weaker, or porter, version of one of the super rich and complex Scandinavian mega stouts (like their own).

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 dtborelli (322) - Sacramento, California, USA - APR 16, 2010
Nogne O
Winter Ale
Pours deep brown with a medium creamy head and decent retention. Reddish tinge around the edge of the glass. Aroma is largely reminiscent of an aged barley wine, with notes of caramel and sweet teriyaki. Flavor is stoutish with a nutty, toasty, smokey character. Dry hoppy finish. Good brew, and good value on sale.
