COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Bottle. Dark brown pour. Heavy complex aroma: chocolate, caramel and nutty malts, hops, slight alcohol. Flavor is smoother than aroma would suggest, vanilla, oak, spices, malty chocolate, slight hop presence.

( 500ml bottle thanks to Mora2000) Pours dark brown with nice oily bubbles and great lacing. Nose of chocolate, star anise, and gingerbread. Taste of sweet chocolate, coffee with cream, spices, pine and dry cocoa. Nice creamy finish.

Pours opaque black, with light brown head. Nose has some roasted qualities with cookie dough. Palate is a yummy roasty/malty monster. Very dry, nice hop balance, but overall a big roasty monster. Finish is somewhat clean and long, with chocolate sweetness.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2010 Very dark brown color with a medium-sized light-brown head; nice contrast in the aroma: dark, roasty maltiness and licorice is colored by flowery, herbal notes and perky fruits; mouthfeel is quite thick and smooth, body is medium; in the flavor maltiness is overpowering the fruitness (but not completely) giving also hints of licorice and smooth chocolate; it’s mild bitter leaving sweet sensation in the mouth - probably even a bit too sweet. Otherwise a very good one, and close to being great.

Almost black opaque dark brown with light brown head. Strong aromas of berries, chocolate, caramel, coffee, licorice, and alcohol - fruit dominating. Taste is dry roastiness leading into caramel, fruit, and herbs. Finishes earthy. Lingering sweetness in the back of my mouth. Medium body with silky texture and mild carbonation. Rich but drinkable. Juicy taste with just the right sweetness. Really enjoyed this

Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of toasted and dark chocolate, moderate resin for the hops, light dough for the yeast, with background notes of toffee, butter, smoke and a hint of anise. Head is large, frothy, light brown, with some slippery lacing and good legs, and is mostly lasting. Color is murky, very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily/creamy, with a soft carbonation. Great flavors and aromas, and in perfect balance. This well stacked American Strong Ale is worth every penny.

on tap 12/13/2009 at papago. pours into a tulip blackish brown with an off white-tan head. initial smell reminds me of black bread or christmas cake.... slightly smoky, brown sugar, molasses, black raisins, dark malts, odd spiciness and a faint lactic sourness. the flavor is a lot alike... add in some cocoa and cinnamon to the notes of smoke, molasses, black grains, dark raisins and light sourness on the finish. it’s quite fruity but not sweetened. the dryness on the finish really helps keep it in check. it is medium bodied with a crisp texture making it fairly easy to put away. odd in a nogne sort of way... but delicious. 7/4/7/4/15/3.7
