4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Hallstein (13) - Skogn, NORWAY - DEC 28, 2011
One of my favorite beers of all time. Pours a dark red/brown color with a nice head. Nice malty Chocolate-coffee-ish flavor with notes of christmas spices. There is no christmas without this beer, it’s freaking awesome!
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 suprchunk (802) - Heinsberg, GERMANY - DEC 28, 2011
Dark, dark mahogany color - almost black. Could actually be black, but I see mahogany highlights. Giant, light tan head that doesn’t look like it will fall anytime soon. Big layers of bubbles left behind on the glass. Spicy aroma. Ginger, cinnamon, molasses, chocolate and coffee. After the initial whiff of spices the chocolate and roasted aromas really shine. Taste is similar to the aroma, but malt forward with spices on the back end. In the middle is chocolatey goodness. A little thin, but still tasty. I think I found my new holiday beer - so far.

A dark black beer with a dark beige head. Aromas of coffee, caramel, chocolate, smoke. Tastes of chocolate, caramel, hint of spices and a touch of smokiness.

50cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Almost black colour, light beige head. Aroma of tar, peat, liquorice, caramel, earth, sweet, hard roasted malts. Flavour is medium sweet, malty, peat, hard roasted malts, chocolate, hint of spice, liquorice, light earthy bitter finish. Fullbodied. Great stuff, like a peated porter.

Pours pitch black colour with large, beige foamy head. Aroma of ash, dry chocolate, coffee notes, mild spices, dark malts, some dark dried fruits and topacco notes. Flavour of ash dry chocolate, coffee, very distant notes of liquorice, dark malts, caramel, mild dark fruit notes, distant spices and wood. Not as rich with flavour as it was fresh but still very smooth and warming chocolaty brew. Some porter elements on the palate, very dry finish. I wish I could have this regularly.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 CarlJonas (57) - Linköping, SWEDEN - DEC 24, 2011
Bottle, 2009 vintage. Very dark with a nice beige head that leaves lots of lacing. Rich aroma that manages to pack in everything from chocolate to smoked ham without falling apart. The taste is equally rich; bitter, sweet, salty and even a little sour. A marvelous way to end a Christmas eve.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 mansquito (1607) - washington, Washington DC, USA - DEC 23, 2011
CTP, Philly 6oz ($8): Yes, this was expensive, but wonderfully worth it. Pours a blackish color with a nice creamy beige head. Aroma is wonderfully smoky, chocolatey, and hoppy. Taste is similar. The smoke is in exactly the right proportion to everything else. It is really a beer without a style. Beautiful aftertaste. Perfect balance. Good alcohol coverage. Mildly hoppy. Excellent.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 TheGrandMaster (2308) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - DEC 23, 2011
Draught at Galbraiths Alehouse (Auckland, NZ). I really didn’t do this justice, being a bit far into the night. But the palate was noticeably smooth and chocolate prominent.
