COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

75cl bottle in a private beer tasting. It pours a murky very dark brown-black liquid with a dark tan small-medium froth that lasts throughout the beer, leaving some lacing. The aroma has anisette, some distant floral hops and dark malts, with hints of chocolate (mainly) and a little coffee. It tastes less spiced, with lots of dark chocolate; very intense. A little fruitiness (dark friuts) can also be sensed. Sweet and with medium-high bitterness, it is medium-bodied with soft carbonation. It ends rather dry, and leaves an aftertaste similar to an espresso coffee. A very nice, warming brew for winter; I really enjoyed this one. Presentation is very smart and careful.

The aroma is of very complex caramel, with elements of both old ale and barley wine showing through. The appearance is very dark amber. The flavor is much like the aroma in being caramel-based with the maltiness being substantial but not overly sweet. An excellent ale all around.

Bottle from Brewdog beershop. Dark brown, almost black colour, tan head. Nose is caramel malts, molasses, spices, roasted malts, bit of cinnamon and nutmeg. Flavour is roasted malts, fruits, candy sugar, little chocolate and spices. Ok stuff.

Bottle; Pour is cola brown with a similar carbonation level out of the gate; this brew retained fairly well into this tulip, with a nice khaki colored head. Fruity, spicy, but most importantly chocolate malt nose that tends to dominate, overall. This brew had character of tobacco, cocoa, caramel; a fruity hop profile, and spiciness in general on the tongue. I enjoyed it fairly well -

Serving: 500 ml. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a very dark brown with a dense tan head. The nose is potent with notes of spruce and fruitcake. The flavor is a nice mix of hops and malt with pine, spruce, bread, fruitcake, and winter spices all mixing together. Medium to rich in body with softer than average carbonation leading to a medium to long, spiced finish. A quality winter brew.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2011 500 ml bottle into tulip. A bit of a gusher bottle. Pours extremely dark brown color with a huge 2 finger tan head with incredible retention that reduces to a thin lacing cap that lingers for a bit. Aromas of tons of caramel, roasted malt, molasses, chocolate, and coffee. A bit of spicy and citrus hops as well. Taste of huge caramel flavors and molasses, with roasted malt and chocolate as well. Fairly low bitterness on the finish with lingering caramel and roasted flavor. Medium-full bodied with medium-low carbonation. Very nice and creamy mouthfeel. Overall an excellent brew, tasty and smooth.
