COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Poured a dark chestnut color with a medium sized tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, caramel malts, nuts, and light citrus. Taste of more chocolate, roasted malts, nuts, caramel, and vanilla. Low bitterness, with low alcohol apparency. Very nice, I wish more brewers would make non-spiced winter ales!

gahl06, bottled. browny black with a lingering head. porter aroma of dark chocolate with hints of plum and licorice. some curious pear schnapps flavour but otherwise pleasant with a minty finish

Dark muddy brown with a thin golden head. Aroma of cinnamon, spice and everything nice. Full bodied, warming sweet and smooth. Nice bitter finish. One of the top winter beers of the 2008 season.

500ml Bottle: Lightly sweet aroma. Smells of malts, chocolate, raisins, and hints of fruit and alcohol. Poured dark brown in color with a large, dense, foamy, brown head that lasted throughout. Opaque. Very good lacing. Flavor of chocolate, dark malts, candi sugar, roasting, piney hops, and a hint of vanilla. Medium body. Creamy, chalky texture. Soft carbonation. Sweet, chocolate finish is a bit chalky. 8.5%ABV is well hidden.

Thanks to JaBier for sharing a bottle. This beer is a deep dark brown color with a medium frothy tan head that burns away slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and nuts plus some spice. Medium body with flavors of dark chocolate, malt and honey nuts. There is a decent amount of hops present as well. The finish is nicely spiced with a roasted malt and hops aftertaste. Enjoyable all around.

UPDATED: DEC 4, 2007 (Bottled) Very dark brown color with a medium, foamy, beige head. Pretty aromatic-hoppy, grainy-malty, salty-licoricey aroma with a hint of alcohol. Roasted, sweetish-malty, pleasantly dry-hoppy, salty-licoricey flavor with dark chocolate and some fruitiness. Medium to full-bodied, smooth, but somewhat carbonated palate. Has both the dry hoppiness and licorice of the Imperial Stout, and some fruitiness of the IPA - but cant quite reach either of them overall. Anyway, a great beer to spend your Xmas with. Were soooo lucky to have 4 of the very best (if one doesnt count the #100) Nøgne Ø brews currently in the Alko shops here in Finland :). (Draught, brewed at Plevna, Tampere) Clear, dark red with a smallish, lacy and partly lasting, beige head. Served too cold to rate the aroma. The flavor feels more sharply hoppy and thinner than the bottled version (less yeast, I guess). Maybe the water is also harder than at Nogne. Medium-bodied, but a bit thin and quite carbonated palate. I would give this a score of about 3.7...

Draft at Humpy’s. Wow. Robust is my single word descriptor. Smoky. Bit of a bourbon kick. Absolutely delicious. (#4077, 2/10/2011)

Choclate, roasty liquorice aroma. Opaque dark brown with low, dense, tan head that recedes to ring with some lace. Chocolatey, roasty flavour. Medium-full body with sticky texture and moderate carbonation. Bottle sampled at RBESG 2005.
