COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2008 another one from Beerworld of Largo. Very dark brown in color with some ruby highlights. Alot of caramelized malts and dark fruits, specificially raisins, chocolate, and light citrus hanging in the background in the aroma. In the taste, chocolate, molasses/caramel, raisins/figs, toffee, light notes of citrus. Full bodied and moderately sweet. Finishes lightly roasty with a lingering light hop bitterness, a touch of alcohol, and some dry chocolate. Complex, very nice beer.

NorCal tasting Apr 07 - This beer seems to be a bit of an enigma to me. I can’t figure out if it’s supposed to be a spiced ale, barleywine or some sort of a strong ale. It seems to hop around in all the catergories and not really finding a home in one. The aroma mostly roasted malts and it had this bloody, irony character to it. Flavors was sweet malts, some spice like anise or cardammon with some alcohol present. I’ve been impressed by their other beer I’ve had, but this one just didn’t do much for me.

This is my favorite Christmas beer from these guys. Dark brown color, milk chocolate, caramel. Sweet full bodied malty chocolatey mouth with christmas spices with a touch of nuttiness. Mildly sour, dry finish that somewhat tasted like beer mxed with scope.

Rating for Nøgne Ø Winter Ale

Deep garnet, impervious to light in my wide-bodied Duvel glass. A creamy, khaki head is slow to form yet rather quick to leave... soon only a frothy, mochaccino skin. Light soaps and shoe leather corrupt an otherwise well-malted base aroma which finds semi-sweet chocolate and dark fruit as well as coffee bitters and spice. A full, fluffy mouth carries rich, malted flavors and a citric fruitiness before a finish which finds a bitterness that sways between the chocolate and coffee found in the nose. By far my favorite of the four beers I’ve tried from this brewer in the past few weeks.

500 ml bottle, bought in Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam.
Deepdeep brown body with a fantastic creamy and foamy head. Pleasant aroma with dark chocolate, cocoa, deep roasted malt and toasted caramel, some vanilla. Fine mouthfeel, oily texture. Interesting and rich flavor of roasted grains, bit of chocolate and tobacco, some coffee and toffee, nice fruity tastes like raisins and plum. Plus a freaky hop character. Sweet liqueric and roasted aftertaste. Exciting one!
