COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Bottle, batch 175, shared by Jason. Very dark brown body, small tan head. Coffee, tart plum, tootsie roll chocolate in the compelling aroma. Seems like a cross between a dry stout, brown ale, and a Belgian. Malty toffee, chocolate, and an odd banana/peach/pear fruit element. Odd flavor but it doesn’t draw me it - maybe it’s the chocolatey sweetness w/o the balancing roast.

Bottle from capones, thanks Stegosaurus. Beautiful Dark pour with tan head. An aroma of chocolate, roast and coffee floats by your nose. Taste is warming and smooth. This should be considered a porter. EXCELLENT !!!!

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours dark brown with a small light brown head. Aroma of caramel and chocolate, slight spice. Taste is complex, chocolate comes through along with roasted malt, toffee, roasted nuts, chocolate and slight spice and hop bitterness on the finish. Solid beer.

Pours out a deep, opaque, coffee-like sable with a frothy beige head. Aroma is malty with an overtone of molasses and hints of smoke and spice. Rich flavor has tones of molasses, unsweetened chocolate and coffee with just a whisper of sweetness. Texture is thick and heavy, smooth and fizzy, leaving a finish like smoky molasses. Happy Holidays!

Had this for Christmas this year, but that was just before I started to get seriously hooked on rating every single beer I drink. Thus, I had to give it a second go, although it now cost me twice the money since the only place to get it these days are in pubs. Oh well. Pours a deep brown body, almost black, with a foamy caramel head. Smell is of burnt almonds, dark malts and raisins, with hints of clove. Very drinkable and delicious palate. Smooth and yet determined taste; sweet dark malts, some dried fruits and a nice, hay-like hop bitterness to balance. Hints of clove, pepper and smoked wood. Some clove, ginger, herbs, coffee. Can be sipped as well as drank a bit faster, like a good porter. God Jul is one of the most complex Xmas beers I’ve had; barely staying within the Scandinavian seasonal tradition while still branching elegantly into new territory. Finely done, Nøgne Ø.

Bottle. Pours brown with light tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, brown sugar, nuts, caramel and chocolate. Flavor is chocolate and roasted malt, brown sugar, caramel, molassas and some coffee. Mouthfeel was medium as it was cross between a brown ale and a porter. A nice brew that hides alcohol well.

(on bottle 2004 edit. thx Sigmund thx alot) My favorite among the Nøgne Ø so far, still has about 6 or 8 bottles from Sigmund. Grand X-mas brew here. I could go on in praising it, but I´ll just say: this is a perfect balanced ale, in all aspects; brewing in the making.
