4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ernest (5116) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 20, 2008
Bottle (2008 "Winter Ale" edition).
Head is initially large, frothy, light brown, fully lasting.
Body is dark brown, bottle conditioned.
Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, nuts, cookie, chocolate), lightly to moderately hoppy (apricot, flowers, grapefruit, resin), with notes of raisin, anise, toffee, leather, brown sugar.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
Quite delightful. Rich and complex aroma, sweet and warming without being cloying, and the use of hops is quite unlike the typical American treatment (not abrasive or overdone at all). Fruity and spicy with no apparent adjuncts; still offers the essence of a winter brew without beating you about the head with spices. Very well done. I’d buy it again.

A good full-bodied ale. It is quite stoutish, nutty and malty. Bitter sweet finish. Alcohol is well hidden. My first delicious beer from Norway!

muddy dark brown, with a thin head . i got the chunks at the bottom of the bottle which were nice and flocculant fortunately and settled quickly. what a rich beer. like gouden carolus mixed with andechser doppelbock. sweet, round, filling chocolate and whisky and fruit and supersmooth malt luxuriousness. i’m sure this would make a lot of sense in the middle of a 22hour xmas night in Norway. a wallowable dessert beer.

Thanks to JaBier for sharing a bottle. This beer is a deep dark brown color with a medium frothy tan head that burns away slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and nuts plus some spice. Medium body with flavors of dark chocolate, malt and honey nuts. There is a decent amount of hops present as well. The finish is nicely spiced with a roasted malt and hops aftertaste. Enjoyable all around.

This is my favorite Christmas beer from these guys. Dark brown color, milk chocolate, caramel. Sweet full bodied malty chocolatey mouth with christmas spices with a touch of nuttiness. Mildly sour, dry finish that somewhat tasted like beer mxed with scope.

Pours with a deep red body topped by a meidum thick, light brown head with some lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a touch of alcohol esters and a piney hop note. Medium to full bodied and slightly warming.

Pours a near black color with a big creamy dark head that lasts and laces. Aroma is big roasted malt, some pine hops, dark chocolate and a touch of nuttiness. Flavor is much the same, sweet and roasty up front, with some spice and fruit, then a big hoppy boozy finish. I liked it a lot.

Bottle into goblet. One finger beige head a top a reddish dark brown body. Aromas of toffee, ripe banana, plums, nuts, tart berries, slight oxidation. Flavor is coffee, light milk chocolate, banana notes, nuts, sweet bready malt and mild hop bitterness in the finish. Some more oxidation as well. Palate is medium-full and soft, but with a fair amount of carbonation. Really flavorful and complex, its a shame I waited so long to drink this as the oxidation is becoming noticeable. Regardless, a very nice beverage.
