COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Nogne O Winter Ale Pours deep brown with a medium creamy head and decent retention. Reddish tinge around the edge of the glass. Aroma is largely reminiscent of an aged barley wine, with notes of caramel and sweet teriyaki. Flavor is stoutish with a nutty, toasty, smokey character. Dry hoppy finish. Good brew, and good value on sale.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2010 Very dark brown color with a medium-sized light-brown head; nice contrast in the aroma: dark, roasty maltiness and licorice is colored by flowery, herbal notes and perky fruits; mouthfeel is quite thick and smooth, body is medium; in the flavor maltiness is overpowering the fruitness (but not completely) giving also hints of licorice and smooth chocolate; it’s mild bitter leaving sweet sensation in the mouth - probably even a bit too sweet. Otherwise a very good one, and close to being great.

2010 edition, batch 453, brewed 2009-09-14, bb 2014-09-14 (nice symmetry in the numbers here!) - for the first (and maybe last) time deliberately aged over 1 year by the brewery!

The colour is pretty much black. A small 5 mm head forms, but quickly disappears. Nose is very christmas-y, dark red fruits mainly, caramel malt.

Aroma starts out with coffee and a hint of berries. It moves on to nuts, reminding me of parmesan cheese, and some leather and licorice. Feels thick, creamy and very soft in the mouth. Low carbonation which suits it perfectly. Some very nice earthy hops come out in the long aftertaste, leading into a sweet, forest-y finish. Yum! There’s also an overall roasted and smoky aroma here, but it doesn’t protrude, it mainly stays lingering on the outskirts. Lovely long aftertaste which keeps on giving.

Overall I’ll say this is a very well balanced beer, with a quite complex aroma, but not so complex/heavy that it will scare off the "average joe" so to speak, and relatively easy to drink. Bonus points for being nothing like the sweetmalty "christmas beers" from the industry breweries!

Medium thick beige head, and the body is very dark brown, nearly black. Nice rostyness. Detect smoke, leather, soya-sause, and nutmeg. NIce mocca/rosted coffebeans and licorice in the finish. Some hoppyness, mostly in the aftertaste. Very good "juleøl" indeed!

500ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with a nice fluffy head. Aged a year by Nøgne Ø, and what a year it as been for the brew. Wonderful tastes that comes alive. Tastes all over the place, mighty impressed.

UPDATED: NOV 24, 2010 0.5l bottle @ Henriks Bergen. Pours dark black body with a thick beige head. Medium carbonation. Nose is chocolate, coffee, caramel and lots of malt. Tastes lots of sweet malt, spices and some acidity. Ends in a fruity and liquorish-xmas aftertaste. A nice God Jul :-)

Bottle 500ml brewed 2010 batch#532
Pours deep brown almost opaque with solid tan head. Served too cold. Lots of molasses in both aroma and taste. Full oily texture. Need to rerate at proper temp later.
