In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

On tap at Håndverkerstuene. Dark brown with a reddish hue and a beige to off-white head. Roasty aroma with licorice, caramel and hints of dark fruits, spices, hops and smoke. Sweet and malty with a nice and bitter finish. Well balanced. Medium to full body. Nice and delicious Christmas beer with a lovely bitterness. (2012-11-01

40 cl from tap@Taphouse, Copenhagen in straight glass@approx 10 degrees C. Pours dark brown, almost black, with beige head with good retention and some lacing. Roasted aroma with a hint of hoppy fruitiness, liquorice, chocolate, alcohol and dark dried fruits. This is mirrored in the taste which is not overspiced, but much akin to a Black IPA or even a porter: Again roasted malt, liquorice, warm moderate alcohol, chocolate and dark fruits. Hops kicks in again in a moderate degree in the aftertaste. To be enjoyed slowly: Mouthfilling, warming, satisfying, good!.

Bottle from Whole Foods labelled as Winter Ale. Nothing exciting on the pour, flat dark brown pour, non-existent head. Malty, woody aroma, dark roast, burnt toast, peat. Some alcohol heat evident in aroma, very warming on taste. medium weight, slightly slick and oily. Hints of savory spice finish the whole thing.

From bottle in tulip glass. Pours deep mahogany with 1 cm tan head and a bit of residual yeast and has a nice broad aroma of Christmas fruit cake. Dark malts provide significant sweetness and mask the alcohol on the palate. I’m a few weeks late cracking this one but God Jul!

Bottle from Benz. Nice roasted nose. Dark pour. Thin head. Some interesting piney and spice flavors, but I found it a little too colaish for my taste. It’s good, but not one of my favorite seasonals.

50cl bottle, batch #1483, brygget 23.07.15. Pours cola brown in color, lovely thick brown head. Citrusy hoppy nose at first, followed by fresh liquirice, roasted malt, ashy tones and coffee. I could sniff this all day. Flavor has citrusy hops, coffee, ashy notes, liquirice, slightly burnt malts. Lingering coffee notes, some dark fruits there in the back as well as dark chocolate. Massive beer. Very flavorful. 8.5% is nowhere to be found. Feels like a heavy black IPA at first, but also got that bodied caramelly malty stuff in there. Awesome.

Svart, men noe lys slipper gjennom. Intens duft av mørkt brød, syltede kirsebær, dadler og filen. Smaken har nøtter, jord, tørket frukt og en mørk fruktig bitterhet i avslutningen. Denne var god og nytes til pepperkaker med blåmuggost.

500 ml bottle. Pours a ruby reddish dark brown to black with a resilient dark beige head. Aroma is spicy: anise, black licorice, cloves and mint. Flavor is spices, anise, peppermint, chocolate and coffee. Finish is chocolate, burnt caramel, booze, cloves, cinnamon and ginger. Lingering chocolate and coffee, light booze. Full body, velvety and oily mouthfeel, weak to average carbonation. Great Christmas ale.
