4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from The Bottle Shop. Drunk on train from Walmer to Ashford after visiting Plough at Ripple. Always travel well prepared. Very deep brown colour with lasting dark beige head. Smoked game aroma. Not sausage or bacon but way gamier in the meat smoke stakes here. Touch of peaty whisky smoke. Rich in the mouth. Smooth too. Rich smokey and mysterious. Some molasses and coal tar. Like licking a bikers leather jacket thats been made of venison hide. Rather stunning if I am being honest. Almost as stunning as view over Dover coming in by train. It has great finesse for such a beer. Finish has more of the smoke some toffee and some ashtray smokiness. Bit like a bikers pub at the end of the night. Yes leather and ashtray and smoked venison. A beer I wont forget in a hurry. Entertaining. Smooth slightly sweet toffee malt in mouth

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle shared at my friend Ed’s house
Dark dark brown with red tints, big tanned head. Smells of smoke, fireplace and roasted malts. Taste is quite malty, good sweetness and alot of smoke of course, but it’s not as powerful as the title might indicate. Some oily feel, but not any near perfect, nice quite bitter finish.
The story behind all this is of course that this is not a NØ made beer but a winner in the home brew competition, and there is no doubt that NØ’s own smoke beer, Sunturnbrew, is much better

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours hazy chestnut with ruby edges and clingy splotchy tan head. Nose is smoked vienna malty, earthy, with notes of brown sugar, peat, and charred malt. Tastes somewhat sweet, very smoky and malty, with a medium palate heft. Gets a bit smokier as it warms, with the hops taking more of a center stage. This one is very good.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught @ Gastropub Nordic, Tampere.
Pours murky brown colour with small head. Aroma of smoke, malts, mild caramel, yeast and some fruity notes. Flavour of mild smoky wood, lactic acid, malts, spicy notes and some goose berry. Has probably seen it’s best days as the lactic acid is a bit disturbing.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught @ Gastropub Nordic, Tampere.
Pours a deep amber brown colour with a small white head. Aroma of light smoke, mild chocolate and some lactic acid. Flavour of toasted malts, bread, light smoke, bitter hops, sweet dried fruits, tar and wood. Lactic acid is present in the flavour as well. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and a finish of bitter hops and some malts. This keg is somehow contaminated I guess.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught @ Gastropub Nordic, Tampere
Pours dark brown with a smooth white head. Aroma of light smoke, roasted malts, wood and hops. Taste is quite bitter with notes of light smoke, wood and milk. Some tartness, too. Finish has some fruity and bitter notes, with some lactic tartness. A bit too lightly smoked and slightly unbalanced.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught @ Gastropub Nordic
Aroma has smoke, some tar and dunkel-like malt. Feels german. Flavour is smoky and somewhat sour with tar and lactic acid. Also some wood and ash. Good, but the lactic sourness does not fit here. It overrides the smoke after some sips.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at Farmers’ Cabinet.
Pours a dark ruby/chestnut brown color with mahogany edges and a one finger off white head that slowly settles into a thin ring. Spotty lacing left behind.
Smokey, meaty aroma with hints of burnt malt and charcoal balanced by sweeter notes. Hints of BBQ, bacon and charcoal along with caramel, toffee and nut. Could use a bit more smoke character.
Medium bodied with a balance of smoked and sweeter malt notes. The smoke is there but subtle with hints of ash, charcoal and bacon but it’s quickly countered by an overpowering sweet malt presence. Hints of caramel, toffee, hazelnut and some dark fruit. Too balanced for its own good with the sweetness killing off most of the smoke. I like my rauchbiers/smoked beers to be intense smoke bombs but this one is pretty tame. Decent but the smoke is too subtle for my liking.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
(Draught at Pikkulintu. 20120122) The beer poured very dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, smoke and molasses. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were smoke, roasted malts, malts, hops, molasses and bitterness. Aftertaste was smoky, malty and bitter. A decent German style smoked beer with a bit too intense bitterness.
