COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
6 % alc/vol, 32 IBU, is a Rauch Beer lager brewed in the true Bamberg tradition. Smooth, assertive and well balanced. This beer was the winning recipe from the Norwegian homebrewer’s championship in 2011. We appreciate the fact that Erlann Eldorsen came to brew with us! Ingredients: Pilsnermalt, peated malt, crystal malt, Munich malt, hallertau and Tettnang hops, German lager yeast and Grimstad water.

Bottle from Sun Devil. Pours mahagony with a trim beige head. Smells and tastes predominantly of smoked malt, flour, apple skins, and hops. A bit dry on the midpalate, but a nice exemple of the style.

Aroma - not impressive for the style - a little smoke, burnt sugar, toffee, and peat Appearance - very dark brown, with an off white wisp halo Taste - taste has more smoke than anything, peat and caramel are also present. Palate - a medium body, texture is thick, peaty finish Could be that Schlenkerla spoiled me, and I’m trying to have something measure up to it, but this just seemed lacking. What I will say is that it was closest in taste to Schlenkerla’s Rauchbier Marzen. Not bad, but ultimately forgettable.

On tap at Capones. Pours a dark brown color with a small white head that settles to a ring and leaves very little lacing. The aroma is smoke, a bit of roast, and a little bit of bacon. Initial taste has a bit of sweetness with some smoky and woody flavors. The finish has a bit of ash and is quite drying. Medium body and medium carbonation.

Bottle split at JF’s, from Bitter Virtue, 23/08/13. Dark mahogony brown with a big ole light tan head. Nose is malty, light rausch, toffee, touch metallic, mineral notes. Taste comprises burnt cocoa, a greater depth to the smoke, ash, dark toffee, mineral notes, subtle background hoppage. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finish with light smoke. Decent rausch affair, drinkable and not overpowering!

McNeillR (1088) - SCOTLAND - JUN 20, 2013
Dark viscous black with a tinge of brown and beige bubbly head. A little smoke but more like a sweet roasted watered down coffee. Bright and near salty, makerel ping on initial taste. Smooth CO2 that meets a low bitterness in the middle. Sweet and refreshing finish, drips of lemon squeeze zesting up the smoke on linger. Fantastic take on a Rauch.

Bottle, Beer Ritz, Leeds.

Bottle from Seaford Bev? Dark brown with lasting tan head and lace. Aroma of peat caramel and a hint of cinnamon. Burnt caramel with earty peaty smoke and somewhat assertive smoky grassy bitter finish. Lingering grassy earthy smoke. Not sure why this isn’t blowing me away, might be the slightly excessive smoky burnt bitterness or the excessively smoky earthy aftertaste. Nevertheless, very good.
