Batch nr : 723/731. BB : 01/12/15. Brygget : 01/12/11.

Pours an opaque black with a small, but dense, light brown head. Aromas are liquorice, oak, dark roast coffee, cocoa beans, and vanilla. The taste is bittersweet like dark cooking chocolate. The mouthfeel is thick and viscuous, which makes you enjoy this beer slowly.

A present from the barkeep at Tre små rum. Wonderful aroma, pitch black, almost no head at all. Brilliant taste of the barrelageing. Nice work by the norwegians.

Bottle, 25 cl. Thick, black and creamy. Ring of brown foam that hangs on the glass. Smells of raisins, nuts, chocolate and malt. Taste of roasted coffee. Slightly too foamy when drinking. Alcohol taste is balanced.

Alengrin (3019) - BELGIUM - APR 4, 2015
Batch n° 723/731. One of the barrel aged versions of this beer, with opaque black colour and thick, creamy, thickly lacing, deep brown beige head retaining well. Powerful aroma of fondant, vanilla-like oaky tannins, fresh paint and shoe polish (solvents, fading away after a while), charcoal, cold black coffee, banana, orange zest, bacon, suggestion of coconut, bourbon, butterscotch, madera- or sherry-like oxidation setting in and only making it more interesting, wet leather, bayleaf, rhum, chocolate liqueur, cooked meat, fine cigars, plum brandy, elderberry syrup, pure chocolate. Densely concentrated taste, thick candied sweetness of candied dates, oranges and cherries, not cloying, finely tingling carbonation, refreshing sourish accent in a pleasant, fruity kind of way, opening the door to an abysmal maltiness, a great depth of chocolate, nuts and caramel, spicy hops already piercing through and bittering somewhat in the finish, where they meet with a friendly yet powerful roasted espresso bitterness, strong and noble tannin woodiness and lingering, warming, charming bourbon-like alcohol... Man, this is good. I wasn’t too impressed by the regular version - well, less impressed than I expected to be - and I do not think ageing just any imperial stout on wood necessarily leads to something better, but in this case the basic beer clearly benefits from the bourbon barrels: the balance between the deep maltiness and meatiness of the regular beer pairs beautifully with the oaky woodiness, revealing itself in all its glory in just the right place, as if you’re swallowing liquid wood. The bourbon stays nicely in place too without becoming too intrusive, and the hops dosage is perfectly balanced with the malts. Divine, and so far the best Norwegian beer I ever had - this is as good, or even better, as many American barrel aged imperials I had. This is one of those treats I will passionately enjoy from the first drop to the last. I am a bit surprised this does not score higher on this site, perhaps the few years of ageing - or maderisation - made it better than when it was young...?

Bouteille 25cl, #1999, batch#723/73/, BB 01/12/2015, anno 2011 vintage.
