COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Imperial Stout has spent one year in oak casks which were previously used for aging Cognac. We think that this has given it a couple of new dimensions, and hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do!

Pouring out of the 8oz bottle a gloopy viscous entirely opaque black with a thin light tan head. The glass has a few noted alcohol leggings with sizable lacing splotches. The appearance is definately that of an aged Imperial Stout. The aroma is outrageous with huge roasted and slightly smoky malts leading to earthen barrel notes and vanilla bean shavings. After a few more whiffs of the aroma an overall sublime aroma of vanilla and woody booze is left. Sweet, syrupy mid palate with vanilla nuances and a light cocoa dusting are well combined. Sweet finish with roasted robustness and a rather mild bitterness caps off the aged flavour. Earthy and woody barrel flavours persist into the finish with a noted barrel emphasis throughout. This beer is incredibly complex and well rounded for a barrel aged Imperial Stout. Although I am a bit biased because Imperial Stout and in particular barrel aged Imperial Stout are my favorite, this is one hell of brew. Expertly and exquistely crafted and aged I think I would like to try more of Nøgne Ø Imperial Stouts.

From notes taken at the Edmonton Craft Beer Festival: Nogne 0 Cognac Barrel Aged Imperial Stout: Pours ultra dark with a deep brown head. Syrup thick, lingering astringent fizz, pure cocoa.

Boutip (4726) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 19, 2013
Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a small foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light dry roasted malt notes with some light sweet notes and very subtle cognac notes. Taste is also dominated by light sweet concentrated malt notes with light arming alcohol notes with some light bitter black chocolate notes. Body is quite full with oily texture and medium carbonation with not much apparent alcohol. Cognac is harder to discerns then I would have expected but very enjoyable nonetheless.

DuffMan (6752) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 18, 2013
Bottle, shared @ Three Boars. Hearty opaque brown with a dense brown crown. Aroma balances the sweet boozy cognac with the ashy roast of the base beer. Th body is very rich and full, with hard roast taking center-stage, some bitter chocolate, some licorice. The cognac is unobtrusive here, providing some added depth and sweetness without overpowering. I’m ordinarily not a big fan of cognac, but this worked for me.

Cirrhosis (1209) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 11, 2013
Extreme dark brown body and I’m disappointed by the fact that I didn’t get a single bubble during the pour, completely flat looking. Love this aroma, sweet coffee, notable Cognac, almost smokey, hints of chocolate. This smeels oh high quality. OH FAWK WHAT DID I JUST DRINK!!! So smooth so rich. Big heavy chocolate malts, sweet alcohol, almost but not soya sauce, ash. I’m drooling horribly drinking this. Each sip is epic there is not one thing not awesome about this beer, will maybe the lack of bubbles is a problem but was that because of a bad pour? The cognac complements this stout so well. The more I drink the more sweet milk chocolate comes out and I do get vanilla sometimes. WHY WHY IS THIS BOTTLE SO SMALL!?!?!?!?! I’m out of beer and I’m sad now.
