4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 Smaskifa (111) - Oslo, NORWAY - OCT 18, 2012
Bottle from Grünerløkka Brygghus, Oslo. It pours a medium beige head which goes away in a rather quick fashion and leaves a few small ponds of foam on the surface. The beer looks like oil, and you sense the thickness when you ponce and swirl the beer around a little. The presence of the cognac barrel is well felt in the aroma along with some oak, roasted malts, coffee, hints of chocolate and liquorice. The beer has a low level of carbonation, but it’s definitely not flat and dull, and has a thick oily body, it’s well balanced between sweet and and roasted. You pick up the cognac and the barrel in the taste, brown sugar, chocolate, roasted malts. I disagree with the previous raters who think the alcohol level is too high and off balance, for me it was perfectly blended into the aroma and taste. The finish is well balanced and pleasant and stays with you. This is definitely a very well aged beer I could drink until I throw up from the richness.Great experience.
