3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
25 cl bottle. Black pour, not much head. Aroma is cognac, raisins, a medicinal note, a soap like note. Underlying notes of alcohol, chocolate, port wine, peat smoke, almonds and wheat. Taste is rather dominated by the barrel aging as well - cognac, oak, a light fruity note lile that from a cognac. The base beer shines through as well, but the cognac sticks in directions which do not suit the base beer. I think the base beer may be too dry, bitter and roasted, and lacking sweetness and residual sugar, to be complimeted by this very distinguishable barrel aging. I’d strongly prefer the regular.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
(25 cl bottle from Den Nordiske Ølhandel; BBD: July 17th 2017) Pours black with dark brown head that diminishes quickly and only regenerates weakly leaving no lace. Aroma is toffee malt and barrel notes. Oily texture, flat, full bodied with a warming finish. Moderately sweet with aroma notes. Not too bad but perhaps the cognac is too present in the taste.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
25 cL bottle from Les Fleurs du Malt in Lyon, served in a snifter, side-by-side with the original. Pours deep black used motor oil with a small tan head that fades quickly and leaves trace lace. The nose has beautiful notes of oak, cognac, molasses, tar and roast malts, along with vanilla, espresso and spice. The flavour is moderately sweet with roasty malts, oaky notes, spice and a touch of hops. The finish is long and roasty, with oaky notes and a slight peppery spicy accent. On the palate, it is full in body with a smooth, syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is an amazing imperial stout. The cognac barrel has taken a great beer and made it even more impressive. 2012-12-14

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
250 ml bottle. Black body with a huge, foamy brown head. Aroma has dark, smooth roasted malt with coffee and vanilla in harmony with cognac booze. Flavour has sweet, dark, nice roasted malt, coffee, dry fruit, balanced bitterness and warming alcohol from cognac. Fine body and long lasting aftertaste. Pleasant sipper.

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a completly black colour with a brown head that disappears a bot too fast. Aroma of coffee, wood, caramel, with a hint of vanilla. The cognac is notable to a certain extend in the smell, not too dominating which I like. Flavour is licorice, leather, ginger, caramel, roasted malts and wood. Both sweet and sour, with a bitterness that balances the whole thing in a very good way. Great balance. Full bodied, supersmooth mouthfeel. Overall I think that this beer has developed in a really good way, maybe it’s better than the original actually! Awesome!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (250 ml). Thanks to Jean-François! Black with a medium quickly and completely disappearing beige head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol, wood and vanilla. Taste is moderately sweet with roasted malt, wood, vanilla, chocolate and slight alcohol. Fruity finish. Oily mouthfeel. Medium to heavy body. Slight warming alcohol. It’s a good barrel aged RIS, but not a great one. It’s fairly drinkable (I had no problem drinking the whole bottle by myself). Barrel aging treatment is subtle but well done.
