COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Imperial Stout has spent one year in oak casks which were previously used for aging Cognac. We think that this has given it a couple of new dimensions, and hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do!

Oily motor oil black pour with a neglectable, fading tan head. Charry tobacco leaves and chocolate malts dominate the nose which has lost the vinous, agreeably fruity qualities that I adore in the Nogne regular Imperial Stout. The Cognac barrel sojourn has left not unpleasant oxidized flavour traces, including old leaves, porous wood and stale stewed fruits together with spicy and plasticy phenolic compounds. Little to no acidity or hop impact and general sweetness focus make for a flabbier, warmer mouthfeel where alcohol presence is very significant for a 9% ale. I don’t find that the barrel aging has added anything of particular interest in here, no texturing tannins, no refreshing acidity and no remarkable fruitiness. I can’t help but compare to the regular impy and feel comparatively let down. Not something I’d want to drink regularly.

250ml bottle. Black with no head. Bitter and slightly roasted malts, oak, cognac, plum, molasses, hints of dark chocolate. Slightly sweet, full body, bit hot, mild carbonation. Once it warms up closer to room temperature this leaves a great silky and well balanced bittersweet malt and cognac taste on the palate. Wish I had gotten more then one bottle.

Smells toned down, but sweet of grain with hints of stout and cognac. Very dark brown almost black. Taste sweet and licorice (where is the cognac??). Overall good

Bottle. Pours black with no head. Aroma is roasted malt, licorice, brown sugar, bitter chocolate, dried dark fruit, light ashy, vanilla, oak, earthy hops and soy. Taste is medium+ sweet and bitter. Body is medium+, texture is oily and light sticky, carbonation is almost flat. Finishes alcoholic, sweet and roasted. The cognac doesn’t really come through or adds anything significant.

SlackerMads (1613) - Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 9, 2013
Bottle. Pitch black with no head. Aroma is chocolate, leather, cigar, alcohol, oak, dark berries, prunes. Taste is medium+ sweet and medium bitter. Close to full body, sticky texture, near flat carbonation. Chocolate, alcohol and barrel notes in the finish. I prefer the regular version, the barrel aging seems to restrain and narrow the flavor rather than compliment it.

25 cl bottle. Black pour, not much head. Aroma is cognac, raisins, a medicinal note, a soap like note. Underlying notes of alcohol, chocolate, port wine, peat smoke, almonds and wheat. Taste is rather dominated by the barrel aging as well - cognac, oak, a light fruity note lile that from a cognac. The base beer shines through as well, but the cognac sticks in directions which do not suit the base beer. I think the base beer may be too dry, bitter and roasted, and lacking sweetness and residual sugar, to be complimeted by this very distinguishable barrel aging. I’d strongly prefer the regular.
