4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. I was pretty pleased to find a bottle of this as the standard Nogne Imperial is one of my first and favourites. Black with a tan head. Familiar imperial aroma with an outside edge of Cognac. Flavour has the usual chocolatey goodness with a richness verging on Soy. There’s an additional woody element which offers some vanilla and more importantly some top shelf cognac flavours. Sweetness and bitterness are well balanced. This was delicious.

28/II/14 - 25cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: 17/VII/17 (2014-227) Thanks to Klaas for sharing the bottle!
Note: tasted side by side with the regular version.<b/>
Pitch black beer, small creamy beige to brown head, little stable, dissipates quickly, non adhesive. Aroma: sweet, lots of chocolate, mocha, caramel, dried fruits, cocoa powder, roasted stuff, sweet touch. MF: soft to no carbon, full body. Taste: sweet start, bit sourish, fruity, red fruits, berries, cognac, some alcohol, mocha, some coffee. Aftertaste: hoppy touch, sweet caramel, cocoa powder, dried fruits, mocha, coffee, sugary touch. I prefer the regular version.

250 ML bottle
Kept the best aspects of the Imperial stout. Lots of roast and chocolate, quite dry and oily and added the dimension of oak and subtle notes of cognac. Much bigger than the 9% leads on. Full on beer

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Had this back at Hotel Adina Apartments, Mitte, Berlin, Germany, Friday 15th November 2013 Black as the Ace of Spades with a tan head, thick oily consistency though doesn’t stick to the glass like many of this style. The barrel ageing immediately apparent on the nose, but pleasant not overpowering. In the mouth this is a big impressive Imperial Stout but it isn’t heavy, cloying, sickly or sweet indeed it is actually a really intriguing beer. Goes well with a Blacks almond chocolate btw. Roasty, rich and with a little sweet liquorice some bitterness lingering and the barrel ageing leaving its thumbprint. A little boozy spirit does show as you get further into this, mhhh.. its a complex beer but I like it. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
0.25 L bottle (how cute!), served cold (initially) in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep brown black with a modest deep mocha head.
Aroma: Boozy, somewhat woody molasses and licorice with some vanilla undertones, peppery, stern spiciness, berry-like fruitiness, very sweet, deep, big, rich.
Palate: Medium-full body, velvety/thick effervescence with a few prickly bubbles.
Flav.: Very rich and deep molasses and licorice, some barrel/wood and vanilla, fairly boozy, dark dried fruits steeped in dark rum, a little peppery, briny, massive; sweet with big bitterness and a very long, mouth-coating, boozy, licorice, briny, inky finish.
So big. So good. Thankfully the bottle small, because I could drink this until I was blind.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
My Bottom Line :
Cognac vapors roam through vanilla, roastiness, molasses and raisins, building a rich and intriguing Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A veil of foam dwindles to a ring atop the pure darkness.
-The aroma is led by the cognac barrel. I would have preferred more malt presence there as well (which the flavor profile had).
-The mouthfeel is decadent and the flavor profile delicious. Gorgeous brew, yessir!
-Malts are clearly defined, complexity is reached with the added cognac alcohol warmth and the flavor cohesion is impressive.
-I am hallucinating a touch of peat smoked malt in there. Fun stuff. ;)
