COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We think the Russian tsar would have liked his stout this way. A dark, rich ale in which a generous sweetness with roasted malt bitterness. Serving temp.10°C/50°F. Great with vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate.

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, roasted barley, oat, black, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Crystal hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23°P,75 IBU, 9% ABV.

Imperial Stout fra Nøgne Ø er en tett og helt svart ale med stor fyldighet. Smaken domineres av kaffe, sjokolade, lær og tørket frukt. Vi synes den passer bra til mørk sjokolade og kraftige desserter.

Renowned Norwegian stout with a creamy, medium thick and crackling, beige head (even light gushing - fortunately slow enough to avoid spilling a drop); colour a very, very dark mahogany, as good as black. Aroma is pleasing but I miss a "wow" effect; I get bitter chocolate, veal stock, smoked herring, coffee grounds, brambleberries, candied figs, rosewater (increasing as the beer warms up), wet leather, bayleaf, hints of Worcestershire sauce, iron but in a ’good’ (blood!) kind of way, damp earth, tree bark, shoe polish and raisins; there is a sulphuric presence too, vegetable-like as in cooked red cabbage, which I cannot quite put my finger on, perhaps very weak DDS? Rich, restrainedly sweetish onset of candied fruits and raisins, lightly salty accent but not as strong as I’ve experienced in many other examples of the style, somewhat tingling carbonation, sourish touch in a ’deep’ and basic kind of way; a profound, layered maltiness unfolds after this, caramelly and subduedly chocolatey, a bit nutty as well, with a full, creamy and very oily mouthfeel; towards the finish, an increasingly strong coffee-like roasted bitterness shows up, along with some peppery hops for support and extended bitterness and warming, vaguely sherry-like, not astringent alcohol; the nutty and roasted malts stay the longest. Very decent and flawless impy, that is for sure, but somehow I expected a bit more from this. I have yet to compare it with the oak aged versions, of which I have one in my cellar, and I am expecting more from that one.

En lätt rökpuff över lakrids i doften. Saltlakrits och kaffe i smaken, lite bitterhet på slutet. Alkoholen kommer fram efter bitterheten.

Draught sample@Braukunst Live ’15 - SO. Had this a few times before bottled, but as it is such a perfectly balanced example of the style, merging what is best of both UK and US ImpStout traditions, it is easy to forget how fast this has become a modern classic. Bitter chocolate and coffee grounds in aroma merge to form a dry pancake syrup drizzle or dense bitter chocomousse that does not cover, but instead brings out the best in the plummy liquorice malts, red currant and woody berry hop notes whilst still allowing some citrus resins to peek through. More liquorice than berry ash in the bottled version. Again extremely smooth, with no abv bite whatsoever and an ache to please. Both straight entry level and a postmodernly executed, clean master example of the style, offering repeated instances of sipping bliss.
