COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We think the Russian tsar would have liked his stout this way. A dark, rich ale in which a generous sweetness with roasted malt bitterness. Serving temp.10°C/50°F. Great with vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate.

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, roasted barley, oat, black, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Crystal hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23°P,75 IBU, 9% ABV.

Imperial Stout fra Nřgne Ř er en tett og helt svart ale med stor fyldighet. Smaken domineres av kaffe, sjokolade, lćr og třrket frukt. Vi synes den passer bra til mřrk sjokolade og kraftige desserter.

Bottle shared with northropfrye. I love the aroma, which is very deeply smoky and tasty smelling. Beautiful head. I like the flavour at first, which is sweetly smoky, but then it turns bitter and I’m not a fan of that aspect.

50 cl bottle from a Selver in Tallinn (€ 6,59). BB Oct 2017. Pours black with a beautiful tan head - big initially but drops rather fast, leaving a thin layer (only to disappear soon) and some lacing. The aroma is an interplay of bitter hops and sweet chocolaty malts, it’s quite sugary with a very modest roastiness. As it’s warmed some more it becomes a bit pungent with a hint of alcohol - but not nearly enough for the 9% ABV (at least for my taste). Taste starts with a sugary and chocolaty sweetness that then acquires a bitterish note... Good but a bit too one-sided. Not a hint of alcohol initially, only some when it’s quite warm already and I’ve downed 4/5 of it... The beer’s body is mediumish (would love it to be thicker), it has a near flat carboration and a bitterish roasty finish that is on the dry side. No doubt a big beer, but too syrupy sweet and not ballsy enough for me to give it a better rating.

Very smooth for an imperial. No burn or bitterness, only chocolate and toasted malts. Would be a four-poster beer if the metallic taste was muted a bit.

Served on-tap at Al’s of Hampden into a tulip glass.

A - Pours dark as night black with a creamy half finger tall tan head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving little to no lacing down the glass.

S - Smells of dark chocolate malt, coffee, booze, and a light hop bitterness toward the back. This one is pretty sweet with more and more booze coming thru as it warms up to room temp.

T - Plenty of dark roasted chocolate malt up front quickly giving way to a mix of coffee roast, light vanilla sweetness, and a light hop bitterness once the roast dies down a bit. The finish is quite roasted with plenty of it lingering, along with plenty of alcohol burn, for some time. Pretty good but not great by any means.

M - Heavy body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Thick, roasty, feel with plenty of dark roast lingering on the pallet for some time after finish.

O - This one was pretty good but I wouldn’t go chasing it down or anything. It seemed to be a little confused with itself, with lots going on and nothing really standing out.
