We think the Russian tsar would have liked his stout this way. A dark, rich ale in which a generous sweetness with roasted malt bitterness. Serving temp.10°C/50°F. Great with vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate.

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, roasted barley, oat, black, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Crystal hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23°P,75 IBU, 9% ABV.

Imperial Stout fra Nøgne Ø er en tett og helt svart ale med stor fyldighet. Smaken domineres av kaffe, sjokolade, lær og tørket frukt. Vi synes den passer bra til mørk sjokolade og kraftige desserter.

Have been sitting on this for a while! Bottle from State Line, iirc. Sweet chocolate with a Crystal base and prominent C-hops up front (which give a nice, cheerful introduction). Slight acidity with a stroke of salt and tobacco. Pitch pour with dark brown head. Taste is very bitter with some alcohol leaking through, deep, dark roast with a very nice espresso/beany coffee overtone. Chocolate sweetness seeps in a bit before the end, when the dryness retakes the beast. Hops are pushed way to the back now and provide little more than prickle. Plum, light nuttiness, and espresso Schaum. Warm aftertaste. Full, slightly sludgy body with just a touch of scratch from the yeast. Slight oaten oiliness. Nice, soft water. Very high quality - one of my favorite impies!

Bottiglia. Birra fantastica e ben bilanciata.

Black as night with a small rich brown head. The nose is filled with heaps of chocolate and roasted coffee with light vanilla and licorice notes. Tons of roasted malt, dark chocolate and some smoke. Full bodied. The taste is extremely rich with a nice bitter after-taste, with the roasted malt delivering more coffee character than it does chocolate.

Poured from a keg. Not bad, deep black color, coffee and chocolate aroma, a little too bitter going down.

Aroma of malt and espresso, pours a dark brown color with a lasting small tan head. Tastes of chocolate and espresso, with full bodied creamy feel and an espresso finish.

500ml bottle, thanks to Gunnar! Pours black with big tan head. Aroma is big and roasty. Taste is of course flavoursome, although perhaps not as thick as expected. Not a million miles away from their porter and exceptionally drinkable for the strength. Chocolate, coffee, roasted malts all represented and beautifully balanced.

50cl bottle enjoyed @ home. Pours pitch black with a thick beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, dark dried fruits, dark chocolate, vanilla, ashy and a little smoked. Flavour is medium sweet and medium bitter. Full bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Finish is long and roasted.

0,5 l bottle. Pitch dark pour with good amounts of light brown foam. Intensive aroma of chocolate, caramel and some coffee. Taste is very smooth. It leaves a nice, balanced chocolatey feeling with some bitterness kicking in at the end. Also a little dry finish. You can sense the alcohol, but it doesn?t affect the overall experience at all. A very nice imperial stout.
