COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We think the Russian tsar would have liked his stout this way. A dark, rich ale in which a generous sweetness with roasted malt bitterness. Serving temp.10°C/50°F. Great with vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate.

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, roasted barley, oat, black, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Crystal hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23°P,75 IBU, 9% ABV.

Bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown with a finger of fine light brown head. Good retention; minimal lacing. Aroma is medium roast and dark malt--notes of bitter chocolate and coffee. Flavor is similar: mild bitterness and roast up front, fading into dark chocolate, coffee and mild alcohol in the finish. Soft carbonation, medium body, and smooth texture. Excellent beer.

Bottle at The Euston Tap, London on 23 Jun 2012. Poured a thick black, with a dense tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, dates, oak, leather and roasted malt. Treacle in the flavour, with big dark roast coffee, peat, port and light spice. Finish was mild hop bitterness, lingering ash, liquorice and caramel.

Barwa i piana: czarna, nieprzejrzysta nawet pod światło, zatem trudno sprawdzić klarowność. Wyraźnie oleista konsystencja. Piana brązowa, kremowa, obfita, umiarkowanie trwała, ładnie oblepia szkło. Aromat: wyraźnie zaznaczony słód, alkohol i estry. Goryczka i odczucie w ustach: umiarkowana do wysokiej goryczka (chmiel z wpływem paloności i alkoholu), jednak jest ona zrównoważona słodem i dosyć delikatna. Wysoka pełnia, niskie wysycenie i szorstkie odczucie w ustach.

Pours a dark dark brown almost black like oil with similar viscosity and khaki colored head. Cocoa, roasted malt, and some licorice on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with some roast.

Bottle from Geers. Gorgeously pitch black with beautiful brown, longlasting head. Aroma is very hoppy, dry with roasted malts and some coffee, mokka. Taste is roasted malt, dark fruit. Brilliant aftertaste which lasts very long. Winner. Quite heavy on chocolate.

2012 bottle. Pours thick and black with creamy tan head. Complex aroma of licorice, coffee and cocoa. Late alcohol and notes of dark port. Flavour has bitter coffee, licorice and solid, roasted malt. Smooth and full bodied mouthfeel. Boozy alcohol burn creeps through later. Good one.

From bottle in Xiamen, China. Pours black with a large dark beige head and a lot of sticky lacing on the glass. Arome struck me before the top was even off the bottle - roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is toasted and roasted malts, chocolate, lightly sweet with some nice hoppy balance. It’s hard to believe this is 75 IBUs, the balance is perfect. Medium mouthfeel and very soft carbonation. Light bitter finish. Delicious.
