Smaskifa (121) - Oslo, NORWAY - NOV 30, 2013
Bottle. Small white head, dark brown/caramel colour. The aroma is heavily dominated by tobacco, which is taken a little far with a very clear resemblance to my former language teacher’s breath of cigarettes and coffee - a very sour and sort of bitter smell. Same in the taste, and some smokey notes as well as possibly black cardamon. Not so much sweetness, a little dry. Judging by the the name of this beer I would consider changing either the name or the recipe completely. It’s quite interesting to taste the tobacco to such a level, and not really that bad, but it’s absolutely not what I associate with "snadder" (goodies). In conclusion, after trying out a few Xmas beers below 4,7 percent this year, you’re better off going for the stronger stuff.

Bottled. Dark amber, hazy beer. Thick, creamy head. Spicy-sweet, somewhat earthy and gun powder- like aroma. Somehow reminds me of Swedish snuff: it truly has some of that fermented earthiness, tobacco and spices(cinnamon, cloves?) Dark, roasted malts, dark fruits, a bit of spices. Dry, slightly sour roastedness, a bit of yeast and balanced spiciness in the finish. Slightly thin, of course, but way better I thought. Well balanced ale, would do well with a variety of food.

Foffern (1150) - Bodø, NORWAY - NOV 10, 2013
Bottle at home. The beer is slightly hazy brown color, with a light beige foam head of medium size. Its aroma is malty with a touch of nuts, wood and some dried fruit, berries and roasted malt. The taste is also characterized by much malt, and more of the same from the aroma. In addition I find Belgian yeast. Mouth feel is smooth, and the beer has a light bitterness. A good beer with a great balanced flavor and is rich, but feels more like a solid brown ale, and not so much Christmas.

Ruby reddish brown, slightly hazy beer with little off white head. Aroma has coffee cocoa and spices (coriander?). Taste is chocolaty and cocoa sweet and woody. Pretty long and smooth bitter, licoricy and woody finish. Palate is thinner than medium but not watery. Pretty high carbonation. Interesting and original but not really my thing.

0.5L 4.5% brown bottle, from supermarket. Big bright brown head, persistent, making lacings. Brown body. Scents of hops, pine tree, grapefruit, spruce. Taste; lots of hops, spruce needles, juniper, smoked syrupy malts. Underlying bitterness, well balanced, full bodied. Final; roasted malts, smoked chestnuts, trampled pine sticks, dark dry chocolate, coffee-bitter swing. A good candidate in front of a fireplace, or for Christmas evenings. Overall very tastey on only 4.5.

Bottle 50 cl, batch #1026, BBE 09.04.2015. Pours dark amber in color with a tan head. Bit of chocolate, wet old cellar notes and nuttyness in aroma. In the beginning there was something that felt a bit sticky, like perfume or something similar. This faded away quite fast though. Bitter in taste, some bready malty notes and chocolate too in flavor. Tasty brew with chocolate bitterness and mild peppery spicyness in aftertaste. A bit of some harsh notes appears sadly towards the end.
